Title: FreeBMD Equivalent in NZ?
Post by: Pendlewitch67 on Monday 20 June 11 20:25 BST (UK)
Hi

This is my first time researching my ancestors outside of the UK so I am swimming in a very large ocean of resources.

Is there a FreeBMD index equivalent for NZ records? If not please could somebody advise how I could trace the marriage of a David Poulter Child who moved from Bradford, UK to New Zealand after 1905. In 1911 he lived in Eden, Auckland.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Best regards
Amanda

Welcome to the NZ Board.

As you have posted on the Resources & Offers Board (easily done), I will get a Moderator to move this to the main board where it will be seen.

Wow, thank you John.

I have only just read your post.

There is a puzzle in itself. I had assumed that David and Annie had parted. I wasn't aware that she had died.

Sarah was his second wife as per a death notice for a son George who died in 1944.

I shall have to report back to my cousin with this interesting news.

Thank you.

Kindest regards
Amanda

Hi

David married Annie in Bradford and they moved to New Zealand where she died in 1916 and David then married Sarah in 1917 (information kindly supplied by other generous contributors)

Also another plaque that is hard to read - I think one name is Elizabeth.

Hope this helps

Hi Amanda
You may have all the information you require as I see your post was a wee while ago. I was doing some browsing tonight.
I am the great granddaughter of David Poulter. My grandmother was Alice Elizabeth Child (later married to john Wannan) - David's daughter. Yes he did remarry as his first wife Annie died when Alice and George were very young. I will find out from what and let your know. Their son George was in an air accident during the war and their is a memorial for him Yorkshire England as I understand his body was never recovered. He remarried to Sarah later in life. They are all in the cemetery in Avondale Auckland. my grandmother Alice and Grandfather  John Craigon Wannan (from Scotland) they married here in NEw Zealand in 1933. They had 4 children. (*)
Let me know if you need further details to help and I will find out what I can. I recall there was a book written by some of Alice's cousins called from Newchurch to New Zealand - don't know how widely it was published.
Hope this might help you in your search.
Kind regards
Brenda (née Audain)

Hi Amanda,

Brenda still has one posting on the board, that is why you get the message the inbox is full, when you tried to make contact.   As mentioned by Berlin-Bob, in Reply #22 Brenda needs to make a couple of more postings, even if they are just smiley faces, to activate the Private Message system, then you can both send email addresses, as Brenda can't use the system yet.

Hello,
I noticed the name John Craigon Wannan and wondered if this would interest you.
John Craigon Wannan born 28th February, 1906 at Clydebank, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Son of William Wannan, a Brass Finisher, and his wife, Margaret Simmie Craigon. William & Margaret, who married 16th June, 1899, had 6 children. Margaret Simmie Wannan 1900-1901; James McDonald Wannan 1902-1906; John Craigon Wannan 1906-1977; Mary Sharp Wannan 1908-1989; William Wannan 1912-1912, & Isabella Wannan 1913-1993. Margaret died 24th September, 1913 at Clydebank just a few days after Isabella's birth.
William then married Mary Finlayson, a Lady's Nurse, on 28th August, 1914.
In 1920, William, Mary & his 3 surviving children, John aged 14, Mary 12 and Isabel 6, emigrated to New Zealand. They sailed from Southampton, England aboard SS 'Pakeha' on 9th December, 1920, arriving in Lyttelton, New Zealand on 17th January, 1921.
William's parents were James McDonald Wannan, Engine Fitter/Mechanic, 1841-1912 & Mary Wannan ms Sharp 1840-1925. The 1925 Inventory of his mother's Personal Estate lists William's address as 23 Cambria Road, Devonport, Auckland. I believe he died in 1950 and his wife Mary Finlayson in 1955.
I have more information about William parents, grandparents & g.grandparents if you are interested. (Distant relatives)
               Regards,     Dod.
