Somebody recently commented (I can't remember who - sorry) that they had been mis-pronouncing my screen name. That got me thinking that I probably mis-pronounce most peoples screen names but without realising.
So, could you let me know how to pronounce yours (no silly answers, please) and a brief reason why you chose that?
Mine - Rishile - pronounced Ri-shilly - it means sunrise in Zulu (apparently). This was the name of a dance group I was made about for a while and it is also because I live on the sunrise coast (of England).

Mine's based on the fact that I'm a female who was born on midwinter's day.

Kia - like the car (key-uh)
Kia alone is usually not accepted by most sites as a login - not enough letters so I added the Just in front because I'm just Kia ;)

I had been saying (or rather thinking) your screen name as rish-eel :-[
-
Ohhh - you are not 'just' anything :o. Please don't say that.
I was wondering about yours when I wrote my original post. I thought it was something to do with the orange drink.

Personally, I don't understand why people can't simply use their real names. Do you all have something to hide?
-
Using real names makes identity theft easier - particularly on a genealogy forum where family names & other info are often mentioned
On an open access board you dont know who is likely to be lurking and collating info
-
Rishile - do you mean kia-ora? I hated that stuff when I was a wee one.
Ray - because there wouldn't be enough unique names to go around. I use the same name in most places, makes it easier to find me online ;)
Marmalady - very true, identify theft is rife these days, sadly.
-
Mine is halfpint because that used to be my nickname by someone special to me, then it was brought to my attention in the Chat Room that there was a Half Pint on RC and was I the one and same. No I wasn't so instead of changing to another name added the kiwi bit.
Cheers

Mine is mommabear cos I foster kids and have 5 of my own. My kids call me momma bear.
-
Mine is candle flame because I like it :) and I have a nice picture of a candle which I use when I'm not using our 17 year old cat George as my pic :)
-
Mine is our dog and Cornish Cornwall, because I am proud of my Cornish hubby
Pebs
-
mine is Irish and is linked to my name - I've used other nicknames before - all tied in with the legend of Midir and Eadaoin

Mine, because a manager in a call centre I once worked in (and hated nearly every minute of) put down "tenacious" as one of my supposed attributes in my performance management. I wasn't a very good salesperson - apparently I was considered "too nice" (?!), but she at least recognised one thing in me - that I kept slogging away and didn't give up.
And then I realised that with all the ups and downs I've encountered over the years, the one thing that has kept me going is my tenacity. And she got me down to a T. ;D
Once I started my family history research, I thought it might be something to stand me in good stead!
-
My regular name is too common so rarely gets approved when unique names are required. As a child I was called Red (now that attribute comes from a bottle ;)) & my dog's name is Mystic - hence the combo. 8)
Rishile, the comment about the pronunciation of your name came on the poem thread that was posted the last few weeks. I believe you rhymed something with your name & then someone commented that they were surprised at it. I think of the pronunciation everytime I see you now. ;D

danu is my cat - do I need to explain the second bit??
-
I had wondered Linda ;D

Redmystic - yes, I remember now. Thanks for reminding me.
JustKia - yes, Kia-ora - disgusting drink, great advert - I'll be your dog woof, woof, woof, woof, woof
Thanks for everyone's explanations. It helps to 'know' you all.

Most of my user names are after pets.
When I joined RC, I had a little dog called Bullet, whom we rescued from death row at the pound. (They told us they were going to do scientific experients on him!!)
He was small and black, half foxy, half kelpie, (already named Bullet) and was very scared of people and had clearly been abused. He was very much loved by all our family and was with us for nearly eleven years before he passed a way.
-
danu is my cat - do I need to explain the second bit??
Ah! Yes - I remember the saying:
Dogs have masters,
Cats have servants!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Kia - like the car (key-uh)
And I had assumed you were from New Zealand, and using the Maori greeting "kia ora"?
And that's where the orange drink got it's name from.
-
Eadaoin - I always think this in my head as sounding much like Edwin is that anywhere near close or am I way off the mark?
KG - nope, England born and bred and lived here all my life. The closest I've ever been to NZ would be Yugoslavia when I was 2 years old (and yes, I know that's not very close at all... But it is closer to NZ than England ;) ). To be honest back then I was unaware of the Maori greeting.
My very first username when I first dicovered the internet many years ago was Lakassa after a horse my mom had when I was a child. I later started using Breizzze but no-one could figure it out (Breeze) and most got confued by the triple "z". Within a year of being online I became Kia and use it in real life as well as online.
I always hated my birth name, but researching my FH has made me feel differently about names so after I got married I kept my birth surname as a middle name and have now looked at how to legally switch my birth first and middle names and add Kia to the front as that's the name I am known by (and have been for 1/3 of my life).
Ooops, sorry for writing a book.

My user name comes from a big bruise I had on my bottom in the shape of an angelfish and I added the 58 as there was already an AngelFish on site.
(I fell down stairs if anyone was wondering ;D )
-
Mine is simply one of the Scottish Gaelic forms of my name, but since I started researching by the amount of Irish I have found (at one time totally unknown to me) it could just as easily be Seoirse.
-
I wondered that when I saw your name. My youngest grandson is Seoirse. (Thanks to me! His Dad's mother in law wasn't too impressed at the time!)
-
it could just as easily be Seoirse.
Seóirse would be said like Shor-shuh I think, but how is Seoras said?
-
Only the man himself can say for sure, but my guess would be Shur uss.
-
meles (always lower case) is the scientific/Latin name for a badger (well Meles meles, to be precise). And my real name is related to a badger (look at my surname interests!)
Mum collects badgers - porcelain ones, pottery ones, glass ones, furry ones, big ones, small ones... ::)

Hi Winterbloom,Shor-uss with emphasis on the o is how I have been taught.I do love the Irish version though.
-
Eadaoin - I always think this in my head as sounding much like Edwin is that anywhere near close or am I way off the mark?
not too bad! ... Aye-dheen ... is a good approximation.
Eadaoin was a fairy princess who was reborn as human, married ...
then her fairy lover Midir came and turned both of them into swans, and they flew back to fairyland.
(Irish fairies are not little fluttery things, but big powerful magical creatures - think Tolkien type stuff)

Very intermittently.
Seoras I am sorry for what I am going to say, I just glanced at your name and sore arse was what I thought I saw. Please dont take offense. SORRY.
-
Wouldn't be the first time Mommabear, maybe the Irish spelling would be better, but hey if it gives folks a giggle ;D
-
Well, I'm astounded at what I've learned about pronunciation here.
Seoras I thought your name was C-or-ass. Now, with mommabear's help, I think I've got it. ;D ;D ;D
-
I named myself after my favourite composer, but I also like to think that people imagine I'm a 9ft tall man with a bolt through my neck.
well, why not ;)

Especially if they are taking sip of drink and reading at the same time and the screen gets a shower ;D

Quite!
Actually, Igor, I initially fell into the trap of believing you were male (the 9ft and bolt-through-the-neck thing completely escaped me, however :-[)
Your avatar picture of your ancestor kept conjuring up the image of you as a modern-day version of Arthur! ;D ;D ;D

Actually Igor / Mrs. T, I thought the exact same thing for the longest time (not that it matters). After watching posts on some of the Totally Off Topic threads though (and checking out the profile which didn't indicated gender), I thought perhaps I was mistaken. ;D

Ever since I first started using the internet, I have used the name Little Nell, and since beginning FH research, I have discovered that my gggrandfather died in a steamboat accident (explosion) on the Tamar River in Tasmania, and the name of the boat was the 'Little Nell'. The 57 refers to my current age, because there was already another Little Nell here.

Wow! Must have given you shivers when you discovered that Nell! How amazing :)

Hello. Just wondering if the person in question was a George Kerrison? I am a descendent of his brother Stephen junior. We have a web page at http://www.dwyers.id.au/rogers/kerrison/kerrison_goodings.htm that refers to this. If you have any family info or pics I would love to hear from you. Tony
-
I am a bit lazy in this respect, by using my middle two names. I try not to use them for anything but the most legal aspects of life, and try to avoid them even then.
It does give me an easy way to remember who I am online, without giving anything away. ;D
As it is my middle two, I doubt the most ardent hacker could work it out :P

Hi Tony, yes indeed it was George Kerrison. If you post three posts in "proper" forums (not Totally Off Topic), then you will be able to use the PM system. I can then give you my email address, as I cannot put it on here.

And do you support Bolt-on Wanderers?
My by-name came from a short time I spent in the Army, posted to Br. Guiana, now Guyana. It was an unusual posting, even when the Army took in everywhere from Christmas Island to Jamaica.

Since I was lad, it was always said that 'I had a tiger by the tail ' because of the many scrapes and dangerous stuff I used to get involved in.
the 777 is when I met my wife.
-
I guess mine doesnt need any explanation! Im proud to be Marks wife and use it as my online name.

I use the date I met She who Must be Obeyed for other purposes. It was the 13th. - and it was a Friday! (If I say it was Black Friday, she'll kill me! - Ouch!)
-
It was a really miserable day when I picked mine. I tried to think of something that would cheer me up and flicked through the calendar and saw a picture of some sunflowers.

I think of mine as sounding like sssinia as in xylophone
Its source is xenos, a Greek name meaning "Guest, stranger."
and when I first joined - thats what I was, but now I feel part of the family of Roots - maybe I should change it to Exinia.... :D ;) ::)

treehugger was taken ;) and I like signing off with hugs and you all deserve one because you're brilliant!

Everyone calls me Sam and I'm an old f**t. ::)

Mine's the middle name of my 3xg grandad. I've never been able to find out where the name came from and it's always puzzled me. I'm assuming that because (I think) he was illegitimate, that it could be the surname of his father, but I've not been able to prove this or even find any clue that this is the case, it's just speculation.
I don't know why I kept it all in lower case - just a whim - but now I wish I'd given it a capital W, so I often do when I'm signing off.

-
Mine is because that's what I am; a Rance gal and proud of it. 'Rance' is the local dialect way of pronouncing 'Raunds'
-
My first name is actually Jolynn; the 2 is because someone else appeared to have the name as well. I use my first name because, after years of hating it, I have decided that it's a nice name.
Also because I have no imagination and can't think of anything cute or catchy..... ::)
