I have an uncle supposedly born in Carlisle on 22 November 1887. However, I have been unable to trace any record of that birth under his known name or any optional names. Can anyone give me any clues as to how I can trace his birth? He is recorded in subsequent Census records.

Welcome to rootschat Janet.
What is his name? Have you checked a few years either side of 1887?

Thank you for your prompt reply! His name was Albert Edward Pattinson and I have searched everything I can think of! Hopefully there may be something I haven't thought of. His mother was supposedly Hannah Pattinson and his father Dan Pattinson. However, Dan died in 1886 well before Albert was born and I have a feeling Hannah may well have been Albert's grandmother. Possibly one of her daughters gave birth to Albert. I cannot even find a boy birth in Carlisle for the date of Albert's supposed birth. A mystery indeed. Any help would be appreciated!

Does the surname "Deans" mean anything.
There is the birth of an Albert Edward Deans registered in Cockermouth in the 4th quarter of 1887 which might be a possibility.
I can't find anybody of that name on the 1891 census.

There is an Albert Edward DEAN 2 Workington in 1891.

Thanks - I have Albert Edward Pattinson in Whitehaven in 1891, living with his "mother" Hannah. He is also in 1901 with his "sister" (but possibly his aunt, don't think she was his mother) Ellen, in Leicstershire (off the top of my head). By 1911 he was in New Zealand. Deans doesn't feature anywhere in our line.

Oops - not Leicestershire - Lancashire!

Have you ruled out this one, just in case his middle and first names were switched as very many people seem to have done?
Q1 1888 Edward PATTINSON Whitehaven 10b 602 (a November birth could easily be registered in the first Q of the following year).
Scratch that, found him in 1891 :-\
