Title: Rassa,New fawr
Post by: zx123 on Sunday 19 June 11 14:27 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to find out about  my great great grandfather.
On the 1911 census he is listed as being born in Rassa in brecon, and on his marriage certificate it says his residence is somewhere called New Fawr.
could someone tell me where  Rassa or New fawr would be?

At the time of the 1911 census he was living in dukestown in tredegar.

Thanks

I can't see young William & family in 1841 when you'd think that they should be around ......

Hi

As previously stated Rassa was originally in Breconshire but is now in Blaenau Gwent along with Tredegar. Rassa is now spelt Rassau and is situated north of Ebbw Vale. I also have not heard of New Fawr but will have a check.

Cheers

New Fawr - as Osprey has mentioned ("duplicate post") the combination of English and Welsh is odd. I did wonder initially if it was a corruption of or attempt at "Neuadd Fawr"?

Sight of the original wd be useful - is it clearly New?

I think that New Fawr has probably been mispelt and is actually Brynmawr... This town was also in Brecon but is now part of Blaenau Gwent.

Hi,
looking at it now,it looks like the first word is new,but I cant make out the second word.
The marriage was in st peters church in Blaina.
I've never been able to find them in the census before they got married.

Is it "New Town" - part of Ebbw Vale?

Definitely Newtown.

Newtown are the houses at the end of New Church Road just past Ebbw Vale rugby ground.

Just a thought.

Blaenau Gwent Rows in Abertillery were originally called Newtown.

You say he was married in St Peters Blaina. Distance from Blaenau Gwent Rows to St Peters about 2 miles from Newtown in Ebbw Vale about 5 miles.
