Title: Help with John Elder
Post by: Golden Oldie on Wednesday 14 April 10 14:27 BST (UK)
I wonder if someone could give me some advice.
I have a John Elder on the 1901 English census. He is 32, a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery based in Plymouth Citadel District. According to later census he was born in County Derry.
Do you think that he joined up in England and what chance have I of finding his birth
Thank you

If his age in the census is correct he was born c1869 but you wiil need more information to know if and when you find the right John Elder. Between 1864-1873 there were at least 12 John Elders born in Co. Londonderry.
Did he marry? marriage certificate might give father's name and occupation.
Any surviving army records? they might give his place of enlistment and other details.

He married in 1903 in England. His fathers name was James and he was a Job Master but I do not know what that is.
I also dont know where to look for Army records for that date. I looked on Ancestry but it seems to be 1914 onwards.

Hi,
I did a parent search on the IGI and the children were all born in the Ballykelly/Limavady area and the only difference was the spelling of mother's surname.

Title: John Elder

I have John Elder on the 1901 English census. He is a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. He is stationed in the Citadel Plymouth.
According to the census he was born around 1868, and it says County Derry as his birthplace.
My question is, does anyone know how I can find out if he joined in Ireland or England.
I think his parents were James Elder and Rebecca Bailey, but no proof of that.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Perhaps best to post a query on Armed Forces board so the experts there can help.
Also suggest searching for John Elder in 1911 English census (if he was still alive) as that one seems to often list a more exact place of birth (we aren't allowed to do lookups for 1911 English census).

There's a Rebecca Elder (widow) in 1911 census which might be James' wife- 14 children/10 children living:

Thank you for your help.
I will post on the other board and look at the 1911 census. We have to pay to look at this at the moment.
Hopefully it will become free for everybody and we can all benefit
