Title: BMD records for Birr, co Offaly
Post by: J.S on Saturday 18 June 11 08:26 BST (UK)
I recently received advise from Irish Midlands ancestry that
church records for Birr begin in 1838.
My great great grandfather William Roe was born there
in 1816.
Any advice of helping me to trace his family would be
welcome.

You didn't mention what denomination your family were - but going by the dates I suspect it's RC records being referred to. Historic RC records for the parish of Birr are available in the National Library in Dublin on microfilm Pos. 2478. Films of these records also seem to be available through the LDS.

see : RC Parish Birr (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Offaly&parish=Birr-and-Loughkeen&churchid=763)  (Irish Times)

Some transcripts for the parish are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundatiom at www.rootsireland.ie

appreciate the advice. Shall check LDS for that microfilm.
So far all records for Birr appear to be post 1838 and my
GGG was born there in 1816.
