this is part of a census for a man who has been troubling me for a while. on the earlier census he gives his birth place as manchester lancashire. he was living in derbyshire at the time of that census. the image is for the next census where he and his family are in manchester. but instead of his birth place saying manchester as the one above his, it says something else, which has been trnascribed as shropshire?!
the middle word please?

The origin of the name "Shropshire" is the Old English "Scrobbesbyrigscīr" (literally Shrewsburyshire).
Salop is an old abbreviation for Shropshire, and comes from the Anglo-French "Salopesberia". It is normally replaced by the more contemporary "Shrops" although Shropshire residents are still referred to as "Salopians".
When a county council for the county was first established in 1888, it was called Salop County Council. Following the Local Government Act 1972, Salop became the official name of the county, but a campaign led by a local councillor, John Kenyon, succeeded in having both the county and council renamed as Shropshire in 1980

oh no :( not really what i wanted to hear :( i know both census' are the right ones as he is living with his wife in both (unless of course there are two edward edwards with a wife born in whitwell?!) so why would he say manchester in one and shropshire in the other!?

My ggg grandma gives 6 different places of birth from every census right up till her death in 1910. ::)

oh goodness, well i have learnt some cool things about shropshire thanks mort :D, but how do i now go about finding this mans birth?! edward edwards for goodness sake who names their child edward edwards?!!!

That'll be Welsh. Of course he may not have been born in Wales but I expect some not too distant ancestor was. ;) Shropshire is a stone's throw from Wales.

In Wales a patronomic system was often used for naming offspring. eg I have a ggg who was christened James James and his father is James Price. So he was James son of James his twin was named John James.

oh my! so waht started out as a search for a lancashire/yorkshire/shropshire born man may well have ended with a welsh search?!
any suggestions as to where to look now for my man? i can't find a death fr him, he didnt marry his 'wife' and without a birth place he's a tad difficult to pin down!

Doesn't mean he was born in Wales,but his parents(or one of them) may have been Welsh ;D

well ive jut gone back and had a little look again for my man. one census that came up was with the father having been born in flintshire, i took on board what was said about the welsh connection so i thought maybe this could be an option. the fathers name...??
