Hi moorlands,

Welcome to RootsChat

RootsChat is meant for finding ancestors, rather than living relatives.  It was unclear from your post whether or not these people are or possibly are still living.  Personal details of any people known or thought to be living will be removed, in accordance with RootsChat policy, to avoid spamming and other abuses. So people here will be able to give you general tips and hints how to proceed, but not any concrete details.

There are a number of sites that can help you find current US addresses and phone numbers, such as www.switchboard.com or www.whitepages.com.

If these people may be deceased and you have some idea of when they were born, the Social Security Death Index or the California death index (covering 1940-1997) at www.rootsweb.com may be helpful to you.

Hi moorlands, I see that you edited your post to reflect that the people are deceased.  If you can give us as much information as possible about them - approximate dates and places of birth and death, occupations, other relatives, etc. - that may help us to find out more about them.

As you may already know, the US Census is currently only available up to 1930 and the 1940 Census will be out next April, so we'll have to see if other information can be found.

A few questions...

Considering William's age in 1875, I presume he immigrated with someone or was sent to live with relatives?  Do you have names of those people?  Do you have William's mother's maiden name?

What was William's wife's name?  Were the two of them definitely still living as of 1960?  Do you have a specific address for them from that time?

Looking at the information on google of the original request - the address given was 1020 East second street. Apartment 5. Long beach. California USA 90802.
So the zip code for Mary Ann Cox in reply 5 looks correct  ???
There is also a US Public record Index showing William J Pritchard at
address: 1020 E 2nd St, Long Beach, CA, 90802-5504 1993 - 1996. Could this be another relative of the original William born 1868  ???

Thank You Moorlands

If you're looking for the 1990's info, I think it's from a subscription site that starts with an A.

Looking at the California death index on www.rootsweb.com, it appears that the Mary A. Cox found above had a father's last name of Grant and was born in Colorado.  Perhaps she's not the right person.

Hello Moorlands,

Have sent you some entries by pm for you to look at.   We haven't really got alot of information to go on and I was trying to match up the zip codes for you with the original information you gave.

You have told us that William was born about 1868 in  Llanharry, South Wales and they move to America 1875.
Father was Richard and Mother Amelia David. Also William had 2 daughters.

A few questions : - When did Amelia die - was it before or after William and Richard immigrated to the USA ? Have you found them listed on any passenger list or census ?  Can you give a date of birth for Richard Pritchard  ?

Does the address you have ((1020 East Second Street. Apartment 5. Long beach. California USA 90802) come from a letter or is it something you have looked up ?

Any other small pieces of information you may have could help in the search.

Sandra

Hi Moorlands,

Found a little on Mary Ann Cox who was Mary Ann Grant married to George Cox in Freemont. Colorado on the 1 st December 1912.

George Cox was the son of Robert Cox born about 1836 in Birtley, County Durham, England and died 1889 in Fremont County, Colorado. The Mother was Mary Ann Collins born August 1841 in England and died 25 May 1912 in Fremont County, Colorado.

Mary Ann was the daughter of Charles George Grant born 7 April 1862 in Gilfach Goch, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales and died 14 APR 1945 in Florence, Colorado. Charles married Mary Jones in 1884 (according to the 1900 Census) in Gilfach goch South Wales.

Mary Jones was born 6 September 1862 in Wales and died 11 April 1943 in Florence, Colorado.

Mary Ann Grant and George Cox appear to live in Colorado in 1920 and 1930.

Apart from the Welsh connection, can't see anything else to link Mary Ann Cox to William Pritchard at the moment.

Hi Moorland,

Forgot to ask - did William have a middle name ?

Richard and Amelia married March 1867 -  Bridgend - 11 a 517.  Is the entry for a death of Amelia in June 1877 at Bridgend  11 a 395 -your Amelia aged 30 years ?

Also in reply 7 you said "He use to travel back and for a lot" - was that William you mean't or the father Richard ?

hi.
Yes this is the right family in Llansannor.  Cannot find a birth for William or any trace of him in a census, I have even tried to trace him in her maiden name but no luck.  Thats all I know is my grandmothe use to speack about her brother in America and that he died of gold dust.  I also have a photo of the family together and he is standing on a chair with his mother and father and her father is nursing the oldest daughter and my gran is being nursed by her mother. Thank You very much for all you have found for me.

Hello Moorlands,

There is a RAOGK volunteer in California who will look up "Obituaries for all counties" so I wonder if this might be worth a try to see if the Obituaries (if there are any) for Mary Ann Cox and Alice Wilson may give further information to work with ?

First on the list under "ALL" on the link below.

Hi Moorlands,

The link I gave you was not an e-mail address - hover over http://www.raogk.org/californ.htm and then click on it.  That will take you to another screen - under ALL it gives a name of a lady with a name beginning with B, click on that name which will take you to a form to fill in with your details and the request for the 2 Obituaries.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, it appears that the 2nd Street address is for an apartment (or condo) building.  It was built in 1955.

I didn't look at every entry, but I don't see a Pritchard living on 2nd Avenue, on the California voter regs.

Hi Lisa and Moorlands,

Thank you Lisa for checking the directories - Alice Wilson is on the California death index but unfortunately it gives no Mother's Maiden Name or Father's Last Name !!

http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi

Haven't found William on any Census, Lisa - there was an entry in  1900 - Supervisors District 2, Contra Costa, California for a William Pritchard - August 1868 Wales - Single/Farm Labourer but had discounted him. There is also a William 1863 or1870 Wales with a Maude in 1920/30 but can't get them to fit - Maude seemed to have been married previously, was under Dotson  as a 2 nd marriage in 1910 with children of the surname Rettberg.

So far, have only proved Mary Ann Grant/ Cox was not William's daughter but was she some other relation ?
Charles George Grant (father of Mary Ann Cox) was born Gilfach Goch, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales and that does seem to have a significance.

I didn't find William in America, either.  I did see the Contra Costa census.

If the father used to go home to Wales often, we should be able to find him returning to the states?

I tried searching for the "second" William, but since he may still be alive, it's difficult to know where he might be living now.  (He may not have remained in California.)  I looked at his neighbours on East 2nd and apparently none of them were living there in 1996 (when he was).

Is there a common misspelling for Pritchard?  I'll have another look after work today.

PS  I also tried looking for a Bill Pritchard...no luck.

HI Lisa,

This is the father Richard in 1871 Llansannor, Glamorganshire, Wales.  (not sure where William is )

Richard Prichard 28 - Amelia Prichard 24
Alice Prichard   3 - Lizia Prichard   1

This is the father re-married on the 1901 UK Census in Civil parish - Llantrisant-  Town: Gilfach Goch. Glamorgan

Richard Pritchard 58 Born Herefordshire. Coal Miner
Erna Pritchard    57 Born Bristol
Georg Amos    35 Step-Son
Charles Phillips    50 Boarder

Haven't come across Richard on UK Census between 1871 - 1901. Have seen a passenger list 22 June 1880 for a Richard Pritchard which would fit nicely but the invisible William is not with him !!  Not sure when this 2 nd marriage has taken place - haven't come across that one either.

Unless it is EMILY Amos to Richard Pritchard March 1888 - Cardiff - 11 a 372 !!

As I'm looking for Richard, William, Alice and Mary Ann I can't help but wonder if the story is slightly different that what you have been told.  (I hope you don't take offense, I'm trying to offer other ideas.)

My dad used to tell me that one branch of our family lived in England a short time (arriving from France, and sailing to Canada after a few months or years).  After years of research, I've found out that the branch was in England at least 120 years.  While I listen to family history, I don't expect it to be totally accurate.

I was also told that our ancestor's first name was William.  Years later, I found out I should have been looking for a James, not a William.

I know you've given us all of the information you were provided, but is there by chance any little detail that you've not thought important, that could help find a lead?  :-\

Hi,
Not offended at all. This richard and william pritchard have been odd from the begining. The firist I remember about him, when I saw my granny crying she had sent a photo to America of her 60 wedding anniversary and it had been returned person unknown at that address. This was in 1949 and thats all I know is that she had sent this photo to william her brother. There is no trace off william no birth not in any census. The other thing is that he was very eccentric and in the books written about Gilfach Goch it says you knew when he was home has his potmanto with silver pieces was in the station, when he came home he bought land This is all about Richard pritchard I do not know how true this is.
The next thing is when I started to do my family tree I was talking to my cousin and it went on about William and Richard . My cousin is a lot older than me he said about our granmother family in america and that his morthe use to write to them a lot .
He had his mothers diary with that address in America

He his in his late 80s now and has got dementia so I cannot ask him we are the only two left in the family.  I will put my thinking cap on

Regard Moorland
