Title: Directory of Irish People Living in Manchester in 1861
Post by: daisynook on Thursday 16 June 11 08:21 BST (UK)
I tried to order a loan through inter-library service of:

•Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society: Directory of Irish born people and resident in    Manchester and Salford in the 1861 census. Vol. 1 : Ancoats sub-district, 1998, 0947701753
•Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society: Directory of Irish born people and resident in Manchester and Salford in the 1861 census. Vol. 2 : [Ardwick, Beswick, Bradford and Newton and Cheetham sub-districts], 1999, 0947701796
•Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society: Directory of Irish born people and resident in Manchester and Salford in the 1861 census. Vol. 3 : Deansgate sub-district, 2000, 094770180X
•Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society: Directory of Irish born people and resident in Manchester and Salford in the 1861 census. Vol. 4 : Withington, Didsbury, Fallowfield, Levenshulme, Chorlton, Chorlton on Medlock, Ardwick (part), Gorton, Hyde Road gaol and Openshawe, 2001, 0947701818

STILL trying to track my great-grandmother Sarah Kelly down.

Firstly they asked me which Volume I wanted, I hadn't realised there was more than one volume and when I decided that maybe the Deansgate volume was the most promising they told me that due to work going on in Central Library they could not lend the books out at the moment and to try again in December.

Any other kind person have access to these Directories to do a look up for me?

Your welcome, was any of them the lady you were looking for?
If so i could post the rest of the residents at any address she was at 1861 for you.

I'm afraid on looking at the dates and ages I don't think any could be her.  She was born in Ireland in 1853 so she would only have been around 8 years old at that time - if she was in Manchester even by then.

Thanks anyway

Of course one of them could have been her mother whose husband was called Michael Kelly.

Do you have Sarah or any of this family on any other census? How do you know Sarah was born in Ireland in 1853? Tell us what information you have to give us a better chance of finding them on the census records.

I have her marriage certificate.  Born Queens County, Ireland 1853 married William Mather in Manchester Cathedral on 6 June 1873 both residing at Upper Baxter Street, Hulme, Manchester.  Fathers name Michael Kelly.  Witnessed by Dinah and William Foy.

There are so many Michael and Sarah Kellys I've been unable to pin them to the same address and I have no mothers name.

Hi Daisynook

I did a Google search and you've been struggling with this for a while haven't you? Like other people I haven't been able to find anything for the Kellys for 1861 or 1871. If Michael Kelly occupation bricklayer had come over with Sarah you would expect to be able to find him on the census.

I think Sarah probably came over on her own or with friends looking for work. She probably arrived after the 1871 census so was not recorded as a single woman. It makes sense as she was just about old enough to go out into the world looking for work.

On the 1881 census she is a married woman living at 5 Lavende Street Manchester but has the occupation of Braid Tenter this would suggest that she did come over to work and was probably working as a Braid Tenter when she met William Mather. This census wrongly gives her place of birth as Manchester.

The other census returns give her place of birth as Ireland and as you said specifically Queens County. The 1891 census has the family living in Horton, Bradford in Yorkshire. The other census returns have them back in Manchester.

Yes I have been looking for a while and know details from her marriage forward.  As you say she probably came alone and its been suggested to me that she was possibly lodging with William as they were at the same address before the marriage.  The Foy's who were witnesses on her marriage certificsate were probably friends she came over with and I have been in touch with someone who have these Foys in their family tree but they knew no family connection.

I have had no luck with her family in Ireland either, I'd like to know her mother and siblings names and her exact place of birth but its a long shot with lack of paperwork.

Thanks for your interest anyway.

Hi,

From your previous thread, I think there were only two Sarah Kelly's of the right age in Manchester on the 1871 and neither were born in Ireland.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,538203.0.html

I wonder if we should start looking in Liverpool based on that being the most likely point of entry into England  ???.  There are a couple of the right age but none you could definitively identify as yours.

Can anyone on the Irish board help with finding a birth or baptism with you having a specific county?

I think what CGR1970 said about her coming over to work does make sense.  I think they did bring Irish workers over to work in the mills when there was a period of industrial action/strikes by the original workforce.

Roots Ireland have parish records for Queen's County/County Laois there's a baptism that looks interesting but it is a few years out so in order for it to be a match Sarah would have lied about her age. It's possible she could have lied about her age to get work in England. Here is the possible baptism:-

Name: Sarah Kelly
Parish: Raheen RC
County: Queens/Laois
Year: 1857
Father: Michael Kelly

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864- for earlier dates you need to see if a church baptismal records survives (unfortunately many, possibly most, do not and not all those that do still exist will be found online).

Researching a surname like Kelly under the circumstances as described by aghadowey would leave you with little chance of finding the right baptism. The only advantage you have is knowing the father's occupation was bricklayer. The Baptism record from 1857 would cost you 5 Euro as most Irish parish records are pay to view and it would be a gamble to purchase it in the hope of the father being a bricklayer. I would say you have a brickwall here in your research that is very common with research into Irish ancestors. I don't think you'll be able to find out any more about Sarah Kelly.

Even worse then. Don't buy that baptism record it won't confirm anything.

A very expensive option ("fee of €10 is for the initial assessment"...) with no more guarantee of an accurate result than Roots Ireland site mentioned earlier.

Look on the bright side a lot of people don't know the county where their Irish ancestor came from so at least you know they came from Queen's County/Laois.

Yes it is very expensive and I would expect an initial consultation to be free of charge if I was employing a professional, however, I thought the website was worth looking at as there is a fair amount of background information on there about Laois and the different parishes.

I wish you luck in your search Daisynook and I know how you feel.  My 3 x gt grandparents didn't specify which county in Ireland they came from but I live in hope that something might turn up one day.

My husband's 3 x g.grandparents and 2 sons came over to Liverpool from Dublin sometime before the 1841 census, but like daisynook, it's impossible to find anything out about him.  His first wife died and he re-married in 1857, from that we know his father's name, and he married under the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, but that's as far as we can get.

Hi C.

Thanks for the info, but as we only have their names (common Irish ones!) and approx year of birth based on 1841 and 1851 census, I think it's a hopeless task really.  I suppose if I ever found a baptism for my husband's 2 x g.grandfather around 1824 in Dublin that might be a start.

Anyway, I'll dip out now, the topic is about Irish families living in Manchester, although my husband's 2 x g.grandfather and his Liverpudlian and probably English wife did move to Manchester in 1851 and then they vanished.
