Hi ashbrookehistory :)

Do you have their marriage certificate?  This should give you their parents' names and allow you to trace back further.

Cheers

Hi again :)

If you want to trace backwards, you will really have to buy the marriage certificate (or a transcript of it).
You can find the reference for the marriage registration (and other births, deaths and marriages) in the index of the NSW BDM Registry:

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

The reference number for your couple's marriage is 2118/1880, and they were married in the Redfern district.
There is a link on the results page (if you do a search for the marriage) to enable you to buy a certificate online, or you can get a transcription agent to copy out the information for you instead - this is a cheaper option but you then won't get to see the original handwriting.
There is a link to info about the transcription agents on the NSW Resources page of the Australia board here on Rootschat:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html

Have you looked on the Trove digitised newspaper site to see if your relatives are mentioned in the papers of the day?
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper

I will move this topic to the Australia board where I think you will get more specific help :)

Cheers

Selina's in 1935

There is no marriage on the NSW indexes for William SWEET to an Ann, however there are two children registered from 1858.

This is the only death for an Ann SWEET

SWEET Ann
Father Walter  Mother Sarah

On TROVE there is a 1873  marriage notice for a Sarah SWEET dau of William SWEET of Richmond.  Perhaps a dau of Wm and Ann but not born in NSW.

When WILLIAM THOMAS SWEET enlisted for ww1 , he was a metalworker and his mother S. SWEET was given  as Next of Kin.

Her address then was Henley Rd. Redfern.

By 1918 when a pension was granted to WILLIAM, he was living at "Carinya" Norval Street, Auburn.

To move forward then, perhaps you can offer further details

At present we have not really learnt from you what direction you would like the search to take.

Helpers here have many resources {some of them not free, but subscription -based} so in order to get the best from your inquiry, what else can you tell us?

Hi,

I have just found this post, and can take you a little further back. Selina Cobby's father George, was the son of William Cobby and his wife Ann(nee Blackman). He was born in Hastings, England. George went to Australia aboard the 'Orontes' in 1838, along with his mother and stepfather, Richard Hamilton, and his other siblings. His father William had died a few years earlier. I don't have all the details in front of me at present, but if you would like more information, please let me know.

Regards,
Lesley

Hi,
Have just found this posting and realise there has been some time lapse since your last posting.  My connection with the Cobby/Sweet family is through Jane's sister - Marguerite Priscilla Sweet - she was my grandmother.  If you would like some information on this side of the family please message me.  Regards, Roslyn

Hi, sounds like the same family - "your husband's Aunty Rita" was my grandmother - Marguerite Priscilla Sweet - married to William Simper Pilgrim.  So your husband must be connected to  Doreen Ashbrooke who lived at Mt. White, had a daughter Pam.  Would really like to get in touch with Pam, if possible.  Does she still live at Narara - that is only 5 minutes from me.  I should be able to get my hands on some photos (not many I may add)  Regards,  Roslyn Maher (nee Pilgrim)

Hi there,

Here is what I have for George Cobby etc.

Parents William Cobby and Ann Blackman married 20.04.1819 at Hastings St Clements. William was born in 1799 in Eastbourne Sussex and baptised at St Marys Eastbourne, 06.10.1799. He died in Hastings and was buried 19.01.1835 at St Helens. William was a painter. Ann Cobby later married Richard Hamilton at St Helens, Ore on 04.09.1836.
Children of William and Ann:
Caroline, ch. 03.10.1819, buried 19.03.1820
Charlotte ch 14.04.1821, bd 02.02.1821
Charles ch 05.04.1822
George William ch 02.05.1824
Mary Ann ch 02.07.1826, bd 28.04.1830
Winifred ch 06.02.1830, bd 28.04.1830
Edwin ch 06.03.1831
Elizabeth ch 01.09.1833
Susanna ch 05.07.1835

The above baptisms and burials were all at St Helen'sChurch, Ore.

Charles, George William, Edwin, Elizabeth and Susanna, all travelled to Australia. Whilst I have been able to follow Charles and George in Australia, I have no further information on the other siblings. A half sister Amelia, was born to Ann and Richard Hamilton.

Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Lesley
