I am researching my paternal ancestors. My Gt Gt Grandmother was Wilhelmina Vondervelden born abt 1825 Nassau Germany, she married Peter Schmidt born abt 1823 Germany I know they arrived in England around 1855 - 1861 and made a life for themselves in Tonbridge Kent. On some documentation Peter's occupation was Skin Dresser on others General Dealer. Has anyone any information or suggest how I might go about finding them please

I'm sorry I don't know anything about research in Germany but if you have a look through this board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,135.0.html (that's the board for research in Europe) there will probably be some links to resources or even other posts with people researching similar areas.
Good luck and a Big Welcome to Rootschat :D

I think I might have some family info for you and I am really interested to get in contact with you about your family tree. please see below:
My G G G grandfather Gustave's marriaged Elisabeth Kirschei, 25th October 1868, at Church Of St Boniface, Mile End Old Town, Middlesex, a German Catholic Church. Witnesses were Peter Smith (Schmitt) and Wilhemina Smith (Born Vondervelden). Celebrant was A.D. Purcell, RC Priest, John B. Ratcliffe Registrar. Another family member found that Wilhemina was formerly a Vander Velden and probably sister to Gustave.
Please visit my family tree that has Wilhemina on it.

I think we might be looking for the same line. My grandfather was Frederick Schmidt and his parents were Wilhelmina and Peter Schmidt. I had been looking for the name Vondervelden for ages before I realised it was Wilhelmina's maiden name since i grew up with a family story that they had changed their name during WW1 from Vondervelden to Schmidt! I think it must be the same people.
