Title: Woodfine Smith 1875
Post by: Cheryl16 on Sunday 12 June 11 16:51 BST (UK)
Hi I hope some one can help please.

I am looking for the mother of Woodfine Smith, born 1875 in Longton, Staffordshire. She appears in the census named as 1871/Carolina;    1881/Catherine;    1891/Curaleoner;    1901/Catherine.

I know Woodfines father was Joseph Smith, son of Zachariah Smith and Ann, possibly Davis, I can't find a possible candidate fo Mum!

Thanks Cheryl

Thanks for looking. I had already looked at TL's stuff, and know they aren't featured in there.
I know the dates are right... and the parentage. All info I have (and have checked in the census) is from The Family tree of Woodfine Smith by Josephine Tombs, published by RTFHS. Zachariah is the son of Woodfine 1780 and Sarah Boswell, and sibling to Sentinia AKA Centy AKA Henty Queen of Black Patch. As I said I know about Joseph but nothing of Coralina/Carolina/Catherine. I think she might be Black Patch too but can't find a trace of her other than she is in the census as wife of Joseph.

i suspect this is the marriage of the parents due to Lydias birth and them not being married in 1861

Marriages Dec 1868
Harris    Sarah        Stoke T.    6b   336
Rutter    Caroline        Stoke On Trent    6b   336
Smith    Joseph        Stoke T.    6b   336

stoke covers Longton

however if you purchased a birth certificate it will show mmn.

Toni, thank you... That really looks like a possible. I'll order the cert, if it's not them I will just add it to the pile of "well it might have been" certs I have for my gypsies.

I sent away for birth cert for Woodfine:

Here are details; WOODFINE SMITH b. 11 April 1875. Longton, Staffs. father; Joseph Smith Mother: CATHERINE SMITH nee HOLLAND. Like Joseph, she signed it ' X ' (Her mark).

So Catherine/Coralina etc was a Holland. Joseph always claimed to be born Leicester and Catherine/ Coralina in Coventry, but I know the Hollands had strong links to Leicestershire too.

Any thoughts people?????   Sasha.... do you know anything about this lot?

Found a bit more but it's not helping. Joseph's first cousin, Moses, son of Moses Smith and Susannah Sheriff was married to a Elvira Holland, supposedly from Flintshire. I wonder if Catherie and Elvira were sisters...

All help gratefully received

Thanks Cheryl

I donīt know if this will help you. But have been informed I am a descent of Woodfine Smith the gypsy horse dealer who lived at Black Patch Birmingham. However my great grandfather was Joseph Smith born 1847 and his son Stephen Smith born 1885. They were both living in Longton in 1911 I got this info from the census I know they were gypsies because my father Thomas told me

Hi,    New Zealand calling...................
I am descended fom Woodfine's younger brother Matthew (1880).
You state that Woodfine's mother, Joseph's wife,  was called Coralina.  Woodfines's birth cert. shows her name as Catherine (nee Holland) not Coralina. (she used various first names)!
I would be very interested to see your family tree please.

Hello Alan
Lovely to hear from you. I have re checked you are correct Catherine,  the 1881 census correct, it say Joseph was a tin man then. 1891 Joseph with children and wife. 1901 still in the same area. Yes I have been doing the tree and found the Familys moved over to live new life in USA and Canada. Who I have found the decendants. We have done a FB page, really lovely to see us all on the tree and sharing information. Would love you to join, you will be welcome. I have got quite a lot of information and in contact with some writers---- FB woodfine Smith.

Hi Penny and Steve,
I am not up with abbreviations, so presume FB page means FACEBOOK?????
I have not wanted to join Facebook for several reasons.
Woodfine married an Elizabeth PYATT not PRATT as you state.  I have a copy of their marriage cert
and it is clearly listed as such.  Also signed by her father James Pyatt (Miner) December 1st 1895.
My email is tynedale@slingshot.co.nz so we can communicate more in depth directly with one another.
regards to you both,   Alan

Myra christening

   Myra Smith
   Female
Christening    30 Oct 1870   Longton, Staffordshire, England
Father's name:   Joseph Smith
Mother's name:   Correlia

There is a Myra Smith in the GRO registered in 1870 STOKE-UPON-TRENT mother maiden name Holland. Children are not always registered where born or where baptised.

Bit of an old thread here Wendy, hopefully the others get back to you :)

Hi.yes a couple of people have been in touch
Yes it's an old thread but I've only just started to find family information.
I did find that Myra was a granddaughter not a daughter !?
Trying to go back further but the family search site is a bit confusing. Sometimes the info is there. Next time it's somewhere else in the list !!
