Title: Where to go for Information on Recently Deceased
Post by: Obwan on Saturday 11 June 11 22:22 BST (UK)
I have several relatives who have died in Australia within the last 30 years.  They do not appear in Ryerson Index.  How do I find information about them?  All I know is where they died i.e. Perth several years ago.  How do I go about finding a year of death or where they are buried.  I'm not next of kin so I can't  purchase the certificates.

Is their year of death and associated details all you are seeking about your people?

I would like anything I can to include in my tree but I'd settle for their year of death and burial location.   Normally I'm happy to purchase their death certificates, unfortunately I'm not permitted to, not being next of kin or in contact with anyone who might be.

Hi Olwyn

That's a good start, what information do you have on the 4th person such as location? Also the Australian resources link below might help you.

Information on my 4th person is as vague as the others.  He died in Melbourne several years ago.  He was in care. only in his forties but suffering with a form of dementia.  I have his full name, that is all.  Olwyn

There are many cemeteries with online records and a number of chatters have resources.  I can understand you may not wish to place family names of recent deaths on the web however if you would like to pm me I am more than happy to help.

Before you order any headstone photos it may be worth checking that your relatives were not buried in an area of the cemetery which has been renewed.  The MCB website has been revamped recently and the map and information about their renewal program has been removed.  However there is this information

What is cemetery renewal?

The term, ‘cemetery renewal’ describes the practice of redeveloping existing cemetery burial areas to accommodate new gravesites and memorial locations. A cemetery renewal program has been continually operating at Karrakatta Cemetery since the 1970s.

For more information regarding the cemetery renewal program, please email mcb[at]mcb.wa.gov.au or contact Client Services on 1300 793 109.

Cheers

Cando The person's name is GLS born 1960.  He never married and I'm sure his siblings would like to know when and where he is buried.  Once you see the name I will modify the post to show initials only.   Olwyn

I can see no death funeral notice ...archive from 1998 although there are a number with his first given name and surname but appear to be husband of or father of.    I have searched some of the larger metropolitan cemeteries with no result.  I will have to leave the search until tomorrow now.

I am grateful for your effort on my behalf.  I suspect there was no one who would submit a notice.  Thank you for trying.

Hi Cando , I owe you an apology.  The year of birth is incorrect.  The family gave me 1965 but it didn't sound right.  They said there were 4 years between him and the next child.  The youngest was born in 1956 so I figured it must be 1960.  I've just come back from the library, the microfiche have 1948 and I checked every year from 1943 (the year the parents married) and there is only 1 for G L.  His sister was born in 1952.  I found a burial at Springvale Botanical Cemetery for Dec 2003.  The date of birth is 22 Nov and the family gave me 27th Nov so I have a feeling this is the one.  Proving it might not be easy.  I will contact the family and ask them to reconfirm the birth date.  Olwyn

Hi Olwyn

If you PM me some details it shouldn't be too difficult to find his birth. Do you know his mothers maiden surname? Also his sisters details and roughley his birth location.

Hi Olwyn

The Melbourne Herald Sun 10th Dec 2003 has the following tribute

, passed away suddenly on Dec. 8, 2003, aged 55 years. Will be missed by his friends and staff at Belair Gardens.

Once you have copied the details I'll edit to remove name, let me know when

The link below has limited info re Belair Gardens. It is very close to the cemetery

Done....

You are fabulous.  This is brilliant, it would be beyond the realm of reason not to be convinced by this evidence I have the correct person.  Thank you.     Wasn't the Belair Garden's staff wonderful to insert this notice.

The help I have received with this post is amazing.  I thank you all.

I have just noticed this comment

"The Melbourne Herald Sun 10th Dec 2003 has the following tribute"

Could you tell me is there a site where you can look up the notices in the Melbourne Herald Sun ?

Thanks

Hi Cass

If you go to the Herald-Sun website and look at the sections News, Sport, Entertainment etc across the page you will see Tributes. If it is archived you have to pay to see the full entry but it does tell you how many words the entry is

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/
