We're coming to England next week! We will spend one day in Burnley, my mom's home town. I want to learn anything I can about her ancestors.
I'll start with my great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Sharples 1881 - 1981! She was born in Blackburn and came from a family of cotton weavers. She married John William Starkie at age 18, but her common law husband for 20 years was John Henry Nuttall, my great grandfather (also a weaver).
Now I'd like to begin my search Elizabeth's father. All I have is that her parents were John Sharples and Elizabeth Ann Chew, Blackburn, no dates. Elizabeth had one brother Jim, who married a Nellie.
My aunt's notes say John Sharples was also a cotton weaver. I was excited to see an article on the CottonTown website about a James Sharples, who was able to become a painter, even while working every day at the cotton mill.
Key question: How is my John Sharples is related to the weaver/painter James Sharples, who is featured on the Cottontown website?
On our trip to Burnley, we'll be visiting the cotton weaving museums. My kids may even do their history fair projects on this topic next year in the States.

I have more information on james Sharples the artist and ironworker -he was never a cotton weaver
James Sharples b 4 Sept 1825 Wakefield Yks
died 13 Jun 1893 Blackburn Lancs
His father and both grandfathers were blacksmiths - James became a smith in the ironworks and self taught himself to read and write -also a self taught artist & engraver
He was one of 13 children
married Sarah Moor? 7 april 1852-Sarah died 1861
James then married Sarah Ford 20 Jun 1863
He had a son and a daughter with both wives son with first wife was Lorenzo B Sharples - with 2nd wife there was a daughter Clio Pamona Sharples and a son James F Sharples -if any of those names ring a bell
he died Blackburn
so if you are trying to connect your John Sharples to James Sharples the artist - I think it may be difficult???

Oh Thank you, "Down-Under" I think that must be the right family. In that case, my great-great grandfather, John Sharples would have been born around 1851 I guess. My aunt's notes include siblings for Elizabeth Sharples: Arthur, Nellie, Ada, and Jim. It says there are more brothers and sisters, some of them 1/2.
Suzard, yes, I see now that James Sharples (1825-1892) was an ironworker, not a cotton weaver. (sorry, I missed that in my excitement that I may have found a "famous" relative). I guess it's still remotely possible that he's related. Maybe he moved to Blackburn to be near a relative. Is it possible to find out who his siblings or children were? He would have been 26 at the time my g-g-grandfather was born.

Suz, I guess any relation to the iron smith Sharples would go further back. I'll save that information away.
Meanwhile, your new information looks very interesting. I have to go out for a while but will study it when I return. Thank you so much for your help.

Rosie, Suz and Pam,
Thank you for your wonderful help yesterday. Everything you sent was interesting.
My next search will be Henry Sharples and his wife, Margaret Cowell both born in 1823. Should I start a new topic for them?
I'm new, so I haven't figured out how to mark this topic completed.

Thank you to everyone who helped.

My grandfather James Sharples was born 17th July 1888 to John Sharples and Elizabeth (nee Chew, later Walsh) He was a cotton weaver who married Ellen Whittaker in 1904. His half sister Ada married Thomas Farnworth.
Are we related?
Regards,
Linda
