Title: Alfred Hathway (b1848) -Yate Union Workhouse
Post by: kwotto on Saturday 11 June 11 10:48 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I have traced my ancester Alfred Hathway (born abt1848) to the Yate Union workhouse near Bristol - Can anyone tell me what records the workhouse would have held and who holds them now?
He is listed at the workhouse on the 1851 census next to:-
Eliza Hathway(b1825 Wick and Abson)- Could say U for unmarried or M for married???
Sophia Hathway (b1846 Wick and Abson)
Edwin Hathway (b1850 Yate)
I am thinking they are all the same family even though it doesn`t say that on the census. I am now wondering where to look for the next clue........would the workhouse have held details as to families that have entered a workhouse together?
Who holds parish records?? is it the main records office or the church??

Lots for me to learn!!

this site is really helpful in giving what records exist for workhouses

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ChippingSodbury/

Records are at the archives in Gloucester

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/archives

Parish records are at the record office in Bristol

http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/leisure-and-culture/records-and-archives/

Pretty sure it says U, married is shown as Mar. Have a look at the M in Martha further up the page from Eliza, it's different to the U in Union.

Do you a birth cert for any of the children?

Hi Osprey,

Thank you so much for the web details you have sent to me in reply to my Hathway query - and for checking out the letters on the census  - all very helpful.

No, I don`t have birth certs for any of them  and as you have suggested, I will get Edwins as that might be the clue I am looking for..........I am learning that lateral thinking is the name of this game!!
Again, thank you for your help, very much appreciated.
