Does anyone know what S.N. stood for in the occupation/profession column of the 1841 census?
-
Hi
Can you give the reference number for the census so we can see the actual image please.

Thanks for the abbreviations, none seems to fit S.N. unless I'm getting the letters wrong. To have a look at the image:
Moses Solomon, age 36, St Botolph
England 1841 census
TNA Ref H0107-0725
Image 82
Folio 3/11
P. 16
Entry 8
Many thanks,

Hi
It looks like it could be Sh to me. The abbreviations Stan gave would fit with shopman. The next person is an errand boy which could fit quite well.

It does look like S.N. to me, there's definite full stops between the letters
The first letter looks like the S of Soloman and doesn't look like the I of Isabella a bit further down, nor the J of James in the same household.
Do you have Moses in 1851? What was his occupation then?
If he's the one still in St Botolph then he's a clothes dealer and the whole family is shown as being from Poland.
HO107-524-F101-P18
Did you also notice there are 3 more Soloman's in the next household?
Hannah 34
Lawrence 12
Asher 8
All born in county.
Here's the image for anyone else looking.

Thanks for having a look at it, I was just thrown by it looking like S.N. (with a full stop after each letter) but you could well be right, don't want to read too much into it!

JustKia, Thanks for your response and for putting the proper image on there--sorry, I'm new to all this.
Good suggestion about seeing what Moses did in other census years, will check it out. Yes, those other Solomons are actually my ancestors (and the address of 115 and 116 Houndsditch comes up in records I've found) and I'm trying to figure out how Moses fits into the picture.
Thanks,
Margery

Hi Margery, no worries everyone was new to forums at some point - welcome to RC ;)
The 1851 Moses in St Botolph probably isn't the same one.
There's another in Tower Hamlets who is a "general dealer" born Aldgate (which ties in with born in couty in 1841).

None of which help much with the S.N. in 1841 - Sorry.

Thanks for all that JustKia! The occupation probably isn't that important, I had just never seen it. Have been trying to unravel this familly and you never know where a clue will come from. Moses is possibly the brother-in-law of the Hannah in the 1841 listing, her husband Asher Solomons, my ancestor, had died by this time and in the future she lived in Brighton with relatives there.
Great to get your help, much appreciated.
