Hi all - I am trying to collect some information on my maternal grandfather - who having left my grandmother 3 weeks after my mother was born - my mother never met him - so here is what I have so far!
He was born Donald Murdoch McLeod in 1916 - i think - according to the 1916 Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta Census. His parents were Allen and Johanna and I believe he had 3 brothers - George Angus and Jack. He played ice hockey for the "Maple Leafs" which brought him to Scotland where he married my grandmother - he then joined the Royal Canadian Airforce and returned to Canada (I believe) in 1945. Does anyone even know where I may start to find information on him.

Do you have his marriage registration information? If he married after joining the RCAF, there will be a service number. What year did he marry.
Also can you provide any details for all members of the family that you found on the 1916 census as I don't have access to it. The information would give province and town, occupations, ages, dates of birth and where born. (such as another country or province within Canada).
Do you think his brothers were older or younger than him?
What will be available will depend on the province that Donald was born in. There isn't a central registry in Canada, everything is by province.

Big welcome to rootschat...tough one for your first request!
I see from what I can on Ancestry that they are in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, and John ( Jack) is born 1911 and Donald M born 1916. Allen born c.1885 and Johanne c.1892
Unfortunately the birth for John is not yet posted online at vital stats...( 100 yr law so only John will be made available)
http://www.isc.ca/VitalStatistics/Genealogy/vsgs_srch.aspx
We are still waiting for them to do marriages, unfortunately...but you can still write for their birth certs for a fee. There is also information available from WW2 but you need to prove his death for more than a certain amount of years, which you likely don't know...
hockey for the "Maple Leafs" isn't coming up with a Donald...I found a Don but he played in the 70's and never for the leafs...http://www.azhockey.com/Mc.htm
I'll keep looking...although I played the sport myself, My knowledge is limited....so others will know more than I about the sports aspect
This Allen in Sask 1911 census was born Ontario, but not sure if he's the right fellow...Is he born Ontarion on the 1916?

Oh, say...this may be the death in B.C.!!!
Death Sept 21 1973 Nelson, British Columbia, Canada
Donald Murdoch Mcleod
Birth Jan 1, 1917 Shaunavon, Saskatchewan / Age 56y
Married / Spouse: Sarah Dodd
Parents Allan Mcleod Johanna Campbell
Looks as though you may be able to pick up his service record after all if you send for the birth cert for him...( Remember to tell them he was born 1916, though!) and prove the death above matches...In other words none of this can be taken to the bank until you prove this is the right fellow....
Hmmmm. Wonder if he played for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs? ( Amateur hockey team )

You could also send for Allen's war records if they were available, but he isn't listed in attestation
There is one Allen with no information given, though

Yop right shows how to send for files on your ancestor

Hmmm. If you are subscribed to ancestry you can save some time by looking at the tree I just found a
Johanna Campbell b.1891 - Ross and Cromarty County (Ross and Cromarty), Scotland is on a Mcleod Family Tree
-
Gosh - thanks so much for your replies - I am amazed and delighted with what you can find in less than a day and I have failed so much with. The McLeod family tree realting to Ross and Cromarty I believe will be my mum's (Carolyn Stark) who has found that out (if it was someone else's could you let me know as it may be a relation!!)
Re the brothers I understand that Angus and Jack were younger although I may be wrong
THANK YOU so much i am delighted - I will keep looking - now off to find out about the suggested maple leafs THANKS
-
One of the things I don't get is how he is on a 1916 census -if he wasn't born until 1917!! Am i missing something

J.J. is probably in bed and I see that you are online so rather than have you wondering I believe she thinks there is a mistake with the year 1917 on the death registration.
She said in that post: "Remember to tell them he was born 1916, though!) "
I hope you find more information in the sites she posted. Good luck !!

I am one of three children of your grandfather in Canada. My name is Roderick Coston McLeod dob * and living in *. I am the second oldest of 4 children here *. We have wondered for years about my father's life there, but he would say very little and we have known almost nothing. I did not know until after he passed that he had married and had children there. My brothers and sister would very much like to find out more.

The 1916 Canadian census was taken on June 1,1916
Donald Murdoch McLeod was 5/12 months old on that census.
The British Columbia death record indicates his birthdate Jan 1,1917. I think that his wife who
would have been the informant could have made a mistake on the year. Or someone transcribed it incorrectly .. bad handwriting. It happens more than one would think. It happened on one of my husbands ancestors death registrations.
Some headstones don't always have the correct information either.
