Hello
I am trying to find out about my grandmother Anastasia. The surname could also be O'Donoghue and any other variant. My Great Grandfather was Captain John O'Donoghue. he was married to Katherine Phelan/Whelan.
I have her birth as c. 1882. She married in Dover many years later.
My problem is that, between her birth and marriage ,I cannot find her on any Census.
I heard a rumour that she had married 'beneath' her, a farmhand?
I hope someone can enlighten me - long shot.
I have resumed my family tree search after 6 months away from it as it was taking up too much of my time and money (Paul I will get back to your email)
Thank you

You can search an Index to BMDs on familysearch and use the references from any possible matches to order certs to check the full details.
see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
This is the best match that I see :
Name: Anastatia Donohoe
Registration district: Dungarvan
Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1882
Volume: 4 / Page: 672

could this be Anastasia'a parents on the 1901 census ?
no sign of Anastasia though...
Donohoe household, Sarsfield Street (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Dungarvan_No__2/Sarsfield_Street/1771216/)
John's occupation is listed as sailor, but he could have been a captain by the time Anastasia married..

same household in 1911, Catherine is now a widow, but has listed that she had 7 children, and 6 are still alive .... just one son and daughter living at home.
Donohoe household, Sarsfield Street - 1911 (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Waterford/Dungarvan_No__2_Urban/Sarsfield_Street/663475/)

Thanks Shane
These are indeed my ancestors. The problem is where is Anastasia before 1911 census? She would have been about 19.
I have also trawled through the English Census and can't find her until she married my grandfather in 1919.
That's why I am intrigued about being disowned by her family.
I have had a tremendous amount of help from another forum member who it turns out is my relative!
Thank you for your prompt reply and research

I didn't see any sign of her under her birth surname on the Irish 1901 or 1911 census..
what was her status at the time of her marriage in England ? (e.g. single, widowed etc..)
Shane

It does say single but........
She could have come over to England to work in service? Then it's very difficult to track her down.
Do you know if Irish women could have been called up to the services during WW1?

..
do you mean conscription ?
no - I'm fairly certain it didn't apply in Ireland. Many people did sign up though ..

The problem with searching for the name is the number of variations there are for both the surname and first name.. as you've no doubt already seen the O' prefix can appear and reappear, as can the u and/or the g - i.e. O'Donoghue vs Donohoe etc
There quite a number of listings for the name Anastasia on the census returns but I suspect that a few may have reverted to a shortened version - i.e. Anna/Ann. Among the Anastasia listings there is quite a wide variation in spelling, or transcription - i.e. Annastisa, Anastiasia, Anistesia etc
