Is there anyway of finding out the dates my Grandfather joined the police force and retired?
-
Is your grandfather Albert Cornwell b1888? If so, then I suggest that he probably joined in 1918/1919 after the end of WW1.
If it was the Cambridgeshire police, or the then City of Cambridge force, I think Cambridgeshire Record Office would be the place to go.If it was another force, then try the appropriate record office.

Hi
It always worth checking this site for ancestors in the Police too
http://www.blacksheepindex.co.uk/POLNOTES.htm
There is an entry for a PC Cornwell in 1921.
I know that the Cambridge Record Office has a good range of police records so you should be able to find out more about him.

Most of my entries are unfortunately on the wrong side of the index, and in several cases the wrong side of the blanket too!More seriously though it does look as though he did join the police at the end of WW1, possibly suggesting retirement in the late 1940s.

Hi
Thanks for that, any info would be appreciated.

Hi, Albert Edward Cornwell joined the Cambridgeshire Constabulary on 01/10/1919 and retired on pension on 02/04/1946. I have his birth date as 14/03/1899. He served in the army in world war one from 28/08/1915 and was discharged on 22/03/1919. I do not know what regiment he served in.
Hope this helps.

I said guessed late 1940s as a retirement date, based on retirement after 30 years. Not a bad guess as it was in fact 1946.
