Hi,
I am searching for John Wilson born 1845/1848. The 1871/`81/`91/`01 census say born Scotland, Stirlingshire, Stirling.
On all of these census he is living in Great Lumley/ Houghton le Spring area Durham, with his wife Ann (nee Hodgson).....Although I can`t find a marriage entry for them I think it would be about 1868 (if they did actually marry???)
I can`t seem to pin down any definate information on John Wilson prior to the1871 census so now don`t know where to search or what to look for other than a marriage certificate that doesn`t seem to exist........
I am new to family research so wonder if I am missing a clue..........Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

There are 4 John Wilson's of a possible age in Stirling on the 1851 census.Do you know his parents names at all.
-
Hi,
I apologise if I am making faux pas.......have never been on a forum before - I think I am replying to all who have been kind enough to reply to me??....
Pam, down-under - I will check out your suggestion, thankyou so much.
Seoras - Unfortunately I know no other information about him.....even his childrens names are accounted for by being named after his wifes siblings - the only name that could have been passed down that I can`t account for is his grandchild Robert......

Three possibilities Kwotto, number 1 has an elder brother Robert but appears to be with his family.Number 2 is a nephew and number 3 a grandson so possibly without one or both parents which could indicate why he moved and used his wife's siblings names, particularly the nephew if he had no family names to go on.All three are possible though.I hope this is some help.
-
other two,all three born Stirling.
-
Oh and welcome to Roots Chat Kwotto.
-
Wow seoras, so much info - I`m sure I will get used to deciphering it all as quickly as you seem to!! Thankyou so much and thankyou for my welcome.
I was wondering if you know how the registration districts work in Scotland? With my search for John Wilson, I was thinking that Stirling covers lots of little places too and when John Wilson was saying Stirling as a place of birth he may have been saying the largest town nearest to where he was born - or do you think he would have been more specific?? I think I am over analysing because I have no other info!!

These are all Stirling as they give both Stirling and Stirlingshire,Stirlingshire did cover other towns and villages but in my own experience they would give the place and county.Due to copyright we are not allowed to post the whole page but if you want the full pages of these census returns just pop an email address in my Personal Messages and I will send them to you.You have three posts now so you can use Personal Messages,to get to mine just click on my name at the side of this post.
To make it easier Kwotto,I have just sent you a message,at the top of your page where it says messages, you should have a 1 by it,just click on messages then you can reply that way.

Thankyou fifer1947 for all that information you have taken the time to type out for me.....I laughed at the eye popping icon you put on the wealthy family census!! Unfortunately I doubt that`s the John Wilson I am looking for as on the census(s?) I do have for him he is an agricultural labourer and coal miner......never mind!!
I will try to eliminate some of those possibilities and hopefully come up trumps.
