I would very much appreciate some clean up and improvement of this photo of my 2nd g grandfather. I was wondering about the style of the jacket, with very short lapels and sort of a cut-away styling. I haven't seen anything like this. Can it be dated? Also what is that which appears to be a large button above the lapel on the left side of the photo. Is it just a button, or something else? Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
Louise

Well, I would say 1870s.
And it fits with Sarony's life span:

Hello Louise
Men in suits are difficult to date, old men in suits even more so.
This style of morning coat fastened at the neck was a style popular in the 1870's/90's,however as Oliver Sarony died 1879 would have to put this 1875(when rounded corners on cards first appeared) & 1879.
If you have the original can we see the back.

Thanks so much for the dating of the photo and the information about the photographer. I do have access to the original photo, but it is in England and I won't be able to take a photo of the back until later this autumn. I'll do that, however, and resubmit for further help in dating.
Henry Ingham, the subject of the photo was born in 1822. Does that help in the dating? He died in 1891.
Thanks,
Louise

Born 1822 would make him 56/57 in this. It's possible he is as beards make men look older.
