Title: PGCert in Genealogical Studies - Uni of Strathclyde - anyone done it?
Post by: kerryb on Monday 06 June 11 10:04 BST (UK)
Hi

Have signed up to do start this certificate in October and wondered if anyone on RC has studied it?

What were your thoughts about the course?  Good bits, bad bits?  Bits to watch out for?  How has the qualification helped you since?

I'm quite excited about starting studying again, and studying something I currently have a lot of interest in.

Hello Kerry

I've bought all the books. Are you hoping to become a professional genealogist at the end?

Probably!  Well I've got to supplement my public sector pension somehow! ROFL  ;D ;D

Seriously though there are some interesting subjects on the diploma course, 2nd year that could be useful.  The first year subjects, when I first looked I thought I knew about them - bmds and census etc but I bet I don't.  I think it's a really good opportunity to add to my knowledge of where to go looking to find out more about my ancestors and to get more out of the bits I already think I know.

Is this an online/distance learning course or is this a course to be attended at Strathclyde?
Are there any links to this course to see what the entry requirements are?

Long distance online course and I think it has been mentioned on Rootschat before.

Haven't done it myself, but there is a review of it on this genealogy blog that might be useful: http://professionaldescendant.blogspot.com/2010/09/postgraduate-certificate-in.html :)

Hi Kerry and Murray

I've signed up for the PGCert this October too... looks like we're all itching to get going. I'm really looking forward to it! I've bought about half of the books... Am also hoping it will lead to me doing something a bit more professional with my genealogy interests... and maybe teaching/writing.
 ;D

Hi Mcwacky

Bought all the books, filed my family history paperwork, tidied my desk and twiddling my thumbs now til the end of October.  ;)

Have you had any postal correspondence yet?  I seem to remember an email some time ago saying to expect a package through the post but nothing yet!

No, haven't had any postal correspondence yet, either... expect it will arrive mid-Sept if my own experiences of further education are anything to go by.  ;)

Ooh, I'm jealous of you already... all sorted and ready to go! Ha! Ha! I so need to sort out my family history stuff... but am in the throes of end-of-year reporting at least until the bank holiday weekend - but come September am definitely looking at a genealogical spring-clean (and looking forward to bringing some long-deferred order to my chaos) as I have a whole month off - yay!

Ha - you've whetted my appetite again... so I'm off to revisit the booklist and see what else I can let devour my monthly earnings. *chuckle*

There was one particular book, think it was the Internet one was selling for £34 on Amazon.  I found it on www.abebooks.co.uk for £13.50!

Trouble with sorting my genealogical papers is it has whetted my appetite to start lots of different strands of my family tree again.  Bits I had forgotten I had left.   ::)  Better get it done soon before I get to busy studying.

Hi McWacky and Kerry.

Have either of you registered with University yet?

Post by: mcwacky on Thursday 18 August 11 15:18 BST (UK)
Hi Murray

No, I haven't registered yet. Waiting on the info pack as I'm not sure how I do this. The email they sent wasn't all that clear.  ::)

Just went wild on Amazon after Kerry's last post... have now bought all the books and a few more I got diverted by. *chuckle* Looking forward to joining you both on the course and can't wait to get started really. That said, I read the review that was posted on MyAinFolk's blog... looks like we're going to hit the ground running!

When you get accepted for the course they send out a registration form.

Hi Murray

Oh, okay... well I've been accepted but I haven't had the form yet. No doubt it'll come in the post soon enough. Am I right in thinking the course starts around 23rd Sept?

Cati... I suspect we won't be able to stop ourselves... given how excited we are already.  ;)

I've not received the form yet either although I was accepted some weeks ago.

According to the calendar at the end of the updated handbook, the course starts 28 October?

Cati, we'll keep you updated if we get time  ;D ;) ::)

I've just been back on to the application website and the latest application status on the progress page says 17 August - rolled forward to registrations.

So presumably something will happen soon!

Hi Kerry

Hmm,  in my acceptance letter, it gives the start date as 23rd Sept - but looks like you're correct as the new timetables for 2011-12 are, as you say, now available and they show a 28 Oct start date:

http://www.strath.ac.uk/media/ps/cll/cpd/docs/PG_Genealogy_Timetables_2011-12.pdf

That's a shame... so much longer to wait. Ah well. :-)

I also read (via Chris Paton) that the Course Director, Dr Bruce Durie, won't be on the course next year as he's moving on - bit of a shame that as I liked his book very much and, of course, he was responsible for kick-starting the course originally.

Yeah, on registration, I checked today also and found out they are still waiting for one of my referees to get back... so quickly emailed him. :-P

Hi Skye 12.

Like your name. :-) Some of my family roots are from the Isle of Skye (Duisdalemore and Camuscross).

Are you going to be on the course? I finalised my registration today. Still looking forward to getting started.

How about Kerry and Murray - how are you guys getting on? Been reading all those books yet? LOL I found a nice podcast on the NAS site about wills in Scotland by Bruce Durie - it was very good. He has quite a sense of humour. Gave me a few ideas for searching early records. They have some other interesting podcasts as well... although some do go a tad slowly. ;-P

No not doing the course now. I have all the books though ... might sell them?

Hi Skye12

I think I have most of the books now... but you might find someone else on here that would like them. Even someone who's not doing the course might like them. Another way you can sell them is through Amazon. I did that with some of my old course books on a previous course. It was quite simple.

Did you finish the course already or just change your mind about doing it?

Hi Mcwacky

Sent my registration off last Friday, really looking forward to receiving my ID with my awful photo on it!

Haven't started reading any of the books yet, too busy getting back to my family research while I have chance. LOL  Can't wait to get started!

Hi Everyone.

I'm also doing this course and looking forward to it.  I'm sending my paperwork tomorrow.

Have I got it right the course is totally online.  We don't need to go into Glasgow twice a month.  I don't know where I got that from...

I have the date of the 28th Oct...  I'm not that well organised which is freaking me out. :o I have 3 books and have had a look at them.  Has anyone got anymore info cos I think Claire might be feed up emailing me.

Thanks
Gayle

Hi Gayle

Welcome on board. I met two more students-to-be at a SoG event in London last week, so that makes 6 of us so far, including the ones on this forum.

Yes, the course is totally online and starts around 28th or 29th of this month if I remember rightly. Given I live in the south of England would be a bit tough going into Glasgow twice a month! LOL

Have you seen the course outline? I think there's a link to it on this forum somewhere. That's about all I k ow so far. Looking forward to getting started as well, though. Think I have most of the books now. What ones have youmstarted off with?

Exactly how much does this course cost.   Oxford University used to so an open learning course in genealogy that was just short of £1000.  but it was very restrictive in that the work you were asked to do was in the main about areas in the South of England.

The course costs £2350...  The books I have wills and probate tracing your scottish Ancestors and Census the expert guide so I have 5 more to get better get onto amazon.  I have printed out the timetable I've never done a online course before...  I've so far got back to 1740's with my only family and totally hooked.  Can't wait

Hi Gayle

There was someone called Skye on this thread selling some course books. Might be worth sending them a message.

Hi all

Did you all get your letter, etc. from the college this week? Just managed to login to the course. Best way to do it is just to click on the MyPlace link in the letter, login and you'll find the course link on the left hand side.

There's not much open as yet, just two discussion forums, a genealogy wiki and a welcome section with some useful info in it, including a handy referencing guide (citations drive me nuts!). :-) The computer guide is quite helpful.

Well, look forward to meeting you all online next week when, strangely enough, I'll be in Glasgow for a short visit. LOL

Hi Kerryb

I was able to login okay just now. I only saw about 6 student names on the MyPlace list though, so might be worth checking whether yours is 'live'. If your name is Kerry, I didn't see it on the list. I know of at least 2 other people who are doing the course whose names aren't yet in the list.

Cheers.
