Hi everyone I have an Irish gt grandfather who seems to be the true nzenigma. ;)
Joseph Daly c1855-1930 married Mary Anne Heron in Oamaru 1879.
They eventually moved to Wellington.
They had 9 children .
NZBDM documents show Mary Anne as Heron, Herne or Hearne.
Their 4 Sept 1879 marriage certificate records the 'mark' of Mary Anne Heron, (22) spinster
and Joseph Daly (25) widower.
So begins the hunt for the first Mrs Joseph Daly!
14 April 1876 North Otago Times reported Joseph Daly and his wife had Typhoid Fever. They were taken to Oamaru Hospital. Children, 3Y & 18M were also in the house.

18 May 1876 North Otago Times reported on Typhoid patients at Oamaru Hospital.
Mary Daly (29) died also her child born in hospital.
Joseph Daly (24) and Michael Daly (3) survived.

I assume, (NZBDM 1876/2088), Anne Daly (2 Days) was Mary's daughter.
On 7 June 1876, Joseph Daly thanked the people of Oamaru for giving him £24 10s

Expecting to confirm that Mary Mk1 was Joseph's first wife I purchased her death cert_ attached. (NZ BDM 1876/542)
While all other details are consistent with the above news reports, Michael Daly is noted as her husband.???? :-\
I have not found Irish records for any of the Daly/Fitzsimmons etc., but, several NZ Michael Dalys (Dead) that fit the time frame.
All ideas welcome, Cheers Gary

Hello...
How about the Joseph mentioned on this 1875 shipping list
The Wennington arrived 15 May 1875 into Otago
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.familysearch.org%2Frecords%2Fpal%3A%2FMM9.1.i%2Fdgs%3A004412620.004412620_00005
If you add a year to the ages of the children you get 3 yrs and 18 months

Hi Gary,
This looks like the arrival of Mary Daly aged 28 from Westmeath, she arrived with her husband
Joseph aged 22,
Michael aged 2,
Esther aged 6 months and
Patrick aged 20,
They arrived in Otago on the 15 May 1875 aboard the Wennington.
Maybe the informant for her death confused the names,he was the undertaker

It may take a few seconds to load

:) :) :)
Hi Beg and Janette,
Sharp work, Ive been ratting through shipping lists for weeks with little to show.
I agree that an informant mistake is probable. But, the degree of detail about parents and county made suspicious.
Adding to the confusion, our Dalys have all the usual christain names. Great to hear that contemporary Popes are inventing some new Saints. ;D
Thanks, Gary

Gary, I suspect Joseph Daly and the second Mrs Daly are my great great grandparents.... Margaret (1895) was born to Joseph and Mary Ann - Margaret had three marriages..... the first to Henry (Harry) Greenfield then later to Charles Jenkins then Thomas Lyons. Two children were born to the marriage between Harry and Margaret.... Edward and Kathleen Olive (1914). They divorced after the war and Edward went to live with Harry and his new wife Ethel, and Kathleen (my Nana) was brought up by Margaret.
I am having problems tracing some of this side of the family so anything you could help me with would be greatly appreciated. Much of what I'm being told is from my aunt who is still living but a little fuzzy on details. Thank you.

Hi, Harry and Margaret's son, Edward, was my grandfather. Your post is several years old now but it would be great to connect and share info. I have lots of info about Harry's side but almost nothing for Margaret.
