Hi,

There appears to have been a few George Coopers in Tasmania but this is the earliest Directory reference I can see for your George.

Tasmanian Directory 1887 (Middleton & Maning)
GLAMORGAN DISTRICT
Cooper, George , Swansea.

Gerry

Hello Sam and everyone who has helped Sam.

I have established that this is not her George Cooper.

COOPER George
Father Joseph  Mother Matilda KEMP
9 Jan 1856
At Sorell  Reg#1472/1856

This George Cooper died 25/6/1885.He is buried at the Henry Street Cemetery Sorell in Tasmania. On his headstone it states that he was the son of Joseph and Matilda Cooper.( I have a photo of the headstone)
As this George died in 1885 he therefore cannot be the father of Archibald (Archie) Leslie Cooper born in 1896 and in my research I found that this George Cooper never married.
Matilda Cooper (nee Kemp) is my GGGG Aunt.

Unfortunatley the Tasmanian Family Colonial Links Data Base  ::)   has all the wrong information on Sam`s Cooper family and has led her on the wrong track with her George Cooper.Hopefully someone can help her find the right George Cooper.

The 1907 death certificate for George COOPER as posted by Cando should give a place of birth for George if the informant knew.  As Louisa was still alive, hopefully she was the informant and provided the correct information.

thanks everyone for all your help. Your right johngirl I did think that joseph and mailda were my george's family but then i was in contact with one of the family members who sent me a photo of his head stone and realised it was impossible for him to be my george. condo thankyou for the death notice information. All the information on mavis is right, I to found that the  marriage information said Arthur Leslie Cooper but this is definetly wrong Arthur leslie was her son, I didnt know lillian was buried at preston thats great news, Gary cooper, lillian's son was only 8 when she died so he never really had any information on her, Gary is my husbands dad.
                                               thanks again coopsgal

Glad I covered my back with this one ;D ;)  Also George appears to have been a little older than this anyway...well according to his death notice.

Perhaps the same person did the three transcriptions for the indexes.  However I did mention that the electoral roll had Archibald Leslie COOPER at the same address as Mavis.

Just for the record, I didn't take the bdm info from the Tasmanian Family Colonial database.

I agree with Dundee....you need the 1907 death cert to progress with your research.

Cheers

Hi Sam,
Sorry to come into this discussion so late. Archibald Cooper was my grandmother Clara's brother. You have already found his 2 wives. 1st wife Mavis died very young and is buried in Burwood cemetery Victoria with Arch's mother Louisa. Louisa nee Wilkins and Arch's father George Alexander were married in Cullenswood, Tas in 1881. After George died in Zeehan in 1920 Louisa moved to Vic. You may find a birth Registration for George, but after over 10 years of looking I haven't been able to track it down but everything points to the fact that he was the son of George Cooper and Bridget Scanlon both convicts and 1 of at least 8 children. His obit states that he was born in Bicheno abt 1856 There is a distinct lack of documentation at this point and everything that I've found is based on conjecture with a healthy understanding of the geography and the other facts surrounding the family. They had some small farm holdings in the Long Point area of Seymour before George jun. and Louisa moved to Zeehan after the death of their son George abt 1900. Louisa was the daughter of William Wilkins, as far as I know a free immigrant, and Hannah Russell. Hannah's father was also a convict Robert Russell from Lincolnshire. Don't really know what else to tell you at this point but am happy to see if I could answer any other questions surrounding this family.
