Hi,
I'm looking for info on Sarah E Mitten. I've found a marriage between William Crawshaw and Sarah Ellen Mitten in Huddersfield 1883 also found a William Crawshaw and Sarah E on the 1901 census. It states Sarahs birth in Oil Mill Lanc, I think it should read Hoyle Mill. Thanks.

Hi Ted
Free BMD has this birth:
Mar q (Jan-Feb-Mar) 1863 Rochdale
MITTEN, Sarah Ellen
The place and date seems to fit in.

It seems like Sarah's mother was born in the West Indies.
Here they are in the 1881 census in Barkisland, York (Sarah a twiner piercer):
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp (sorry the link doesn't work - type this in on the census: Sarah Mitton, born 1863 + - 2 years and you'll see her.)
I think it fits in pretty nicely, born in Lancarshire and living in Yorkshire where she was married in 1883.
Tell me if you need anymore help

Hi,
Thanks for replying so quick! William Crawshaw was born in Ripponden quite near to Barkisland so that fits in too, probably worked at the same mill. Any ideas on 'Oil Mill'?

FindMyPast has her birth on the 1881 census as Rochdale, Lancashire - which fits with the BMD district.
The 1871 census describes her place of birth as Stainland, and the family are living at Holme Mill, Stainland with Old Lindley.

I agree that Sarah was probably born in "Hoyle Mill" and either there was a transcription error or phonetics.
