Hi,
Well I hope we can help you. So far I have looked for Christopher and his wife in the 1851 census (Free website www.maxwellancestry.com/census) I have found this entry: http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=83104027
As both Christopher and his wife Mary were alive in 1851 there is a fair chance they survive until 1855 so will have death certificates. I’ve done a quick search and it seems Christopher does survive, although I have not looked at the original entry. You said you are new to this and as Scotland has a different system to England I’ll explain it. Forgive me if you know already.
First what's on a death certificate?
Basically all the usual information plus names of parents, this is the main advantage. This is your stepping stone back. (For more information see http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&404)
How to get a certificate?
The most popular way is to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . This is a website run by the same people who run findmypast. It is a credit system and you get to see the original images. I don’t think it’s too expensive although you have to be careful with common names It’s fairly straightforward to use.
Once you have the names of the parents you will need the Old Parish Records. Little is a common name in the area so although you could go straight to them to find the birth of Christopher you would be in danger of going of in the wrong direction. As he has a death certificate you may as well use it.
Let me know how you get on.
Emma
