Title: National Archives/Ancestry
Post by: cosmos on Monday 30 May 11 20:09 BST (UK)
Think I shall always be a beginner.  Has anyone else gone into (or tried to get in to) the National Archives UK and find that you are taken to Ancestry? Its annoying. Would appreciate help, thank.

PS: Not sure where to post this.

The National Archives website will direct you to the Ancestry website and others if you select certain databases

Or Findmypast - if you select certain other databases.

It's all about partnerships and funding and business things.

I think I am right in saying that if you are actually using the databases in the computers in the National Archives building in Londond (Kew) access is free (or at least it should be if they have the settings switched right which sometimes they don't and you have to go and ask an assistant).

Are you looking at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/catalogues-and-online-records.htm this states You can search for the records you need in a number of different databases. These include records held by The National Archives, our records digitised on our partners' websites, and records held in other archives. Searching is free, but there may be a charge to download documents.

There is a column headed "Search our records on partner websites" which directs you to Ancestry etc.
