Title: ROBERT GIBSON ALLAN - Mystery
Post by: DaveM888 on Monday 30 May 11 19:14 BST (UK)
Help - I have a Robert Gibson Allan born circa 1833 who originates from Scotland as declared in 1861 census for South Shields, Durham. I have no other clues other than the fact his father was John Allan as declared in his marriage in 1856 in Durham. There are lots of Robert Allans show up but none with initial G or actual middle name Gibson. I have no other clues, any ideas of how I might trace him?

Hi Dave

Do you have his death certificate? This could well be your Robert:

Robert Allan, est. birth year 1834, died Jan/Feb/Mar 1895, age 61, Stockton, Durham, Vol 10a, page 29

It's worth a look.

Cheers,

Rodeo

You could try looking into any Poor Relief applications he made as these would record the parish of his birth

Hi Dave

Is this your Robert Allan in the 1861 census, residing at 24 Wellington St, Westoe, South Shields, Durham?

Robert Allan, 28, head, Mariner and Naval Volunteer, b. Scotland
Jane Allan, 25, wife, b. Middlesex, Paddington
Mary J Allan, 2, daughter, b. Durham, South Shields

Cheers,

Rodeo

Yes this is him, the only entry I have for him, nothing after that 1871/1881 and nothing before other than his marriage entries on FamilySearch and South Tyneside Registrars for 1856. I have a topic on Durham forum to try and find him in 1871/1881.
Given he was a mariner and naval volunteer he may have been at sea in 1851 as he would be about 18.  But he should show in 1841 census aged about 8 with a father John.
At face value a rumour in our family is t"hat it was possibly Dumfriessshire he came from and his family had a shipyard"

Hi Dave

Did you notice that on the same 1861 census, living just nearby at 25 Wellington St, are Gibsons to whom Robert may well be related?

Alice Gibson 46, head, widow, b. Durham, South Shields
Nicholas B. Gibson, 18, son, shipwright, b. Northumberland, Blythe
Thomas R. Gibson, 16, son, shipwright, b. Durham, South SHields
James E. Gibson, 14, son, shipwright, b. Northumberland, Blythe
Henry E. Gibson, 12, son, scholar
Isabella, 10, daughter, scholar

Cheers,

Rodeo

I wonder if, in fact, the maiden name of Robert's mother was Gibson and these Gibsons are her relations.

Also, I had a look for Mary J. Allan, who was age 2 in 1861. There's a record in the 1881 census for Durham that's worth a squizz. The family is living in Elemore Lane, Hetton Le Hole Durham.

Sarah Allan, 80, head, widow, b. Yorkshire, Leatham Holme
Sarah Allan, 42, daughter, dressmaker, b. Durham, Easington Lane
Mary Allan, 21, granddaughter, dressmaker, b. Durham, Easington Lane

Do you think this could be Robert's daughter living with her grandmother?

Cheers,

Rodeo

The granddaughter is unlikely to be the correct one. In 1881 census she would have been 22/23 as registered as Mary Jane Allen Oct-Dec 1858. There are a few Mary Allans born 1859/1860.

Mary Jane Allan/Allen marries November 1881 so should show somewhere in her maiden name in both 1871 and 1881 census.

As regards the Gibson family, I suspect not as they seem Northumberland family.

Dave, you probably need to cross reference these family groups and fathers John against the occupation of joiner that showed for Robert's father on his 1856 marriage cert. For joiner, you should also search for wright/carpenter/shipwright which may well be other ways for this occupation to come up.

Just a note on the spelling of Allan. Remember in those times, spelling were relatively fluid (and the transcriptions certainly add to this!). Where possible I would search as All*n to pick up on any spelling variations. There will be no right or wrong on any spelling variant that you find.
