Does anyone have any information about the Rowlands family of Penygraig? They owned and ran a number of mines in the area. There's quite a lot I've managed to find just by googling them, including their involvement in the 1884 mining disaster, but I just wondered if anyone else was related to them and perhaps had any personal information (or even better, photographs) that I haven't been able to find online.

Have you got any more information, names ETC ???
I can look for marriage PR's for you.

Thanks! :)
The names are:
Moses Rowlands (1790-1837), a schoolmaster who married a Mary, born in Caio.
His son Morgan Rowlands, (1816-1884), colliery manager, married a Mary in about 1836.
Morgan's son Moses (1843-abt 1896), colliery manager, married an Ann (possibly Evans) in about 1868.

Sorry none of those names are listed, there are quite a few Rowland/s marriages in the Ystradyfodwg area.
Have you got them on a census years?, so that I can check other names in the family. Please give full census ref if you have got it.

Dear Robert 186,
Don't know when you posted request have only just come across it.
Mary Rowland(s), sister of Moses (Mine owner) was my great great grandmother. Have prepared a 25 page booklet on the Rowlands family that focuses on Mary's family from 1790 to about 1890.
Some detail on Moses and his brothers Morgan and Rowland together with their father Moses (1790-1837).
Welcome to a copy which I could forward as a pdf
-
Hi Kubla, thanks for your reply, your booklet would be really useful and interesting. I've sent you my email address in a personal message.

http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/en/home
Search for "Rowlands", publication "Weekly Mail", year "1884" (use slider bar to restrict) - Obituary "DEATH OF TWO OF THE PENYGRAIG ROWLANDS".
-
See also "Cardiff Times", 2 Aug and 27 Sep 1884 .
-
That's great, thanks! I didn't know these Welsh newspapers were all online now.
-
There are already quite a few people researching these ROWLAND families of Penygraig. Try the Glamorgan Mailing List for contact.
-
Is anyone still following the Rowlands/this page??
-
Yes, Still following Rowlands Family,
Kubla

I googled Evan John Rowlands and came across this site - I am descended from Thomas Rowlands one of the three brothers from Caio to the Rhondda. I have posted lots of info on Ancestry for my line.
I would love to receive a copy of Kubla's booklet on Moses' sister Mary - that is not my side and
since not only surnames but christian names repeat themselves I am totally lost with the Moses
names! Is he one of the three brothers ie my Thomas's brother?
I am new to this site so am unclear how to send a private message ie for receipt, hopefully,
of the booklet. Would love copies of the two articles referred to on welsh newspapers online
as previously I have tied myself in knots trying to find info there.
with thanks Jill Rowland
-
Yatton Harry Ref my posting just now - as I say I am new to this site so haven't worked out
what's what - I would love to make contact with other Rowland/s - you mention Glamorgan
Mailing list - how do I find that please and put a message on there?
with thanks Jill

Hi..Just found this site and was wondering if you could send me a copy of the Rowlands family. I am a direct descendant of Moses Rowlands..Moses Rowland James was my mothers father. Kind Regards Roy
-
Roy, not sure if you are referring to me (Kubla).
I have considerable detail on Rowland family prior to 1800. They are not my main focus of interest although Mary Rowland, sister of Moses (Mineowner) and daughter of Moses (Dinas Teacher), is my G3 mother. Quite a lot of detail on family to that point which some added extra on brothers of Moses.
Contact me if this is what you want and I can sent as pdf's

I am related to David Rowlands, Butcher of Penygraig via his mother Mary Isaac and also to Susanna Thomas David Rowlands wife. They are buried at Llantrisant Church yard with their son Dr Moses John Rowlands, who became famous for his discovery of a vitamin bran which he named 'Bemax'. David was Thomas Rowlands son and Thomas was Moses Rowlands 1828-1884 brother.
When I look at my family trees it seems as if you were Rhondda or region born then you are likely to be related to many many Rhondda people.
-
Have quite a bit on David's father in the context of the Rowland family of Moses1 (1790-1837) and Daughter Mary (1825-1881). Of course Moses11 (1828-1884), Morgan, Rowland etc figure largely in that.
Family interests focus on Martins, Jenkins, Rowland, John and Williams. Just finalising 200+ page booklet that considers the families in the context of industrialisation etc of the Rhondda. David is son of Thomas and Mary. Thomas was also a butcher etc.
Unable to send any material through this medium.
Note that previous mail should have said prior to 1900 although have some material on the home of Moses11
e-mails ?
