Title: Marriage Lookup for St Peter, Leeds
Post by: marckellyinoz on Sunday 29 May 11 06:51 BST (UK)
Hi.

I was hoping that someone could lookup the following for me

Thomas Lucas married Mary Winder (or Winders)
20 September, 1802
St Peter
Leeds
Yorkshire

Lucas was my GGGrandmother's name when she married Richard Derrom around 1812 in York (now Toronto), Canada. On her Death Certificate she is written as nee Winder, so I think that  she might have had a first husband who might have been killed in the War of 1812 (They were in the military)

Thank you very much if you can help.

Best wishes,

Marc Kelly

Dear John,

Thanks very much for the look-up. I guess there were no ages or addresses included?

Are there any records of where and when she may have been born, or if he might have been in the 8th regiment of Foot?

Thank you for your help.

Best wishes,

Marc

Sorry no info on that.
you could try IGI for birth records.
Or American  Immigration records.

Hi.

Is there a birth record for Mary Winder Born 10 Dec 1782 Leeds, Yorkshire, England?

There is a Mary Winder born to an Ann Winder (illegitimate) on 1 Dec 1782 in Goosnargh Lancashire, but her burial info (in Auckland NZ) said that she was born in "Lanchichor" Leeds Yorkshire. I have no idea what "Lanchichor" is, unless it was mistaken for Lancashire and the people in NZ were mistaken.

Best wishes,

Marc

Marc....

Having been born and bred in Leeds, I can assure you, that Lanchichor or any area that sounds like it, do's not exist. I honestly think it is Lancashire.....If Mary still had her Lancastrian accent, it could have been interpreted as Lanchichor.

Incidently. There is a Thomas and Mary Lucas, still living in Leeds, on 1841/1851 census. Could this be the couple who married in 1802 ?

Dear all,

Thanks for looking into all of this. It is quite an adventure!

If we can find out if the Thomas and Mary Lucas on the 1841 census are the same ones married in 1802 then that would eliminate them as my Mary (Winder) Lucas, as she would have already been remarried to Richard Derrom of the 8th Regiment of Foot in York (Toronto) Canada in 1813.

If we can find a birth certificate, then that would help to match the age on the census. My Mary Winder was supposedly born on Dec 10 1782 in Leeds, Yorkshire, according to her death certificate in Auckland, NZ.

Best wishes,

Marc

Hi,
If I can find Mary's baptism it might just say daughter of and her father's name.
In early records they don't gie as much info.

Hi.....

Details of Thomas and Mary Lucas in 1851

Waterloo Road, Hunslet

Thomas Lucas / head / age 61 / CHELSEA PENSIONER / Born Hunslet
Mary Lucas / wife / age 60 / born Castle Diamond , Ireland
Richard Armitage / son in law / age 22 / born Dublin   ( I think a stepson )

This Thomas Lucas, joined the 74th Regiment of Foot in 1813, and served 4 months in France, 7 years in North America, 7 months in West Indies. The remainder at home.

He was discharged in 1834, through ill health, at Dublin. I supose this is where he met Mary.

It is possible of course, that some kind of desertion has taken place !

Dear Jeannie,

The 1851 Census Lucas's would have been too young to be married in 1802. I looked at the 1841 Census and there doesn't seem to be any Lucas's there that would have been the ones married in Leeds in 1802 either, which means that the 1802 marriage may still be the Mary Winder that was widowed in 1813 in Ontario and then married Richard Derrom (spelt Derram on marriage banns).

It would be great if we can find the birth of the Mary Winder(s) who married in Leeds 1802.

The marriage in York, Ontario on 10 Nov 1813 said that Mary Lucas had been widowed by the death of another sergeant in the 8th Regiment of Foot (Richard Derrom was also a sergeant in the 8th). Therefore, we only know that his name was Lucas. We do not know what his first name was, unless we can show that the 1802 marriage in Leeds was theirs.

Unfortunately,I haven't as yet found any War of 1812 deaths of soldiers from the 8th Regiment.

The search continues!

Best wishes,

Marc
