Hi.
I am approaching my 25th birthday, and have now a huge sleepless urge to know more and more about the people who walked before me with my name. Please help me. I am moving to England in Septmeber of this year (2011) and it would be amazing to walk in those streets with a richer bond.
This is what I've known so far.
We will start with the earliest.
Charles Bennett
born 18.12.1796***
Marries
Sarah Blackhall (b. 17.6.1799***)
They have 5 Children Charlotte, Caroline, John Thomas Blackhall, William, Frederick. Frederick (born circa 1832, in Deptford, London) Will meet Ann Mason born of Hampshire at an unknown date. They have two children in England. Frederick Jnr Bennett and William George Bennett. ***Meanwhile his mother Sarah Blackhall leaves Charles, father, and moves to live with her son (Frederick Snr's Brother) William Bennett, in the Jersey Isle.
Frederick Snr & Ann Bennett (nee Mason) along with 2 sons, leave England for New Zealand on the Solent 1857 bound for Auckland (They had 6 more children in NZ, kate, thomas blackhall, emily, rachel, rebecca and frances)(Frederick Snr died 1897, 16 June, in Tararu NZ). I am more interested in the earlier years of my family History. I am looking for more information about Charles and Sarah, occupations, registry, parents. What was William doing in the Jersey Isle? etc...
Post New Zealand arrival is something easier gained, so i do not need help in this department.
Help me learn more about my Great great great great grandfather and grandmother.
Thank You in advance for your time, and if you have any information, I will be humbly grateful. :) :D

Hi Ryan, welcome to Rootschat
Is this your William?
....
I cant see Sarah. How did you find her on Jersey?
Hi Groom!
Thank you so much for the result. That indeed looks like my William. Interesting as to how he fell into the same line of work as his father.
The claim that Sarah, his mother, moved to Jersey with him, is purely from an un-confirmed source who also believes it is only alleged. See bottom of this post for the information I aquired this from.
Welcome to Rootschat Ryan,
I am a bit confused as how you have birth Dates for Charles and Sarah if you dont know their Parents names?
Hi Trish! Amazing bunch of information there, and that certainly is my Charles! I'm incredibly blown away with what you have found!
Your questioning as to how i know their birth dates, is answered much like Groom's query, from an unconfirmed source... see link below.
http://www.curiousfox.com/uk/mbprof2.lasso?eid=138024&-nothing
The aforementioned link comes from an unknown person, obviously from my Family, tracing the same things I wish to. I do not know whom posted this, and being 2008, i don't think they will be able to be contacted through this site :(
I hope this helps! I'm filling this tree brilliantly!
Trish! I cannot believe you have found Charles' father!!!! I'm amazed!

This is amazing. You have found Charles father, AND Grandfather...
Making George Bennett my Great x 6 Grandfather. Now branching to Devon. I know there is an extensive library of the Bennetts in Devon, so this has been an absolute find! Incredible!
-
This information is all too good to be left un-published.
If anyone has and suggestions to an online tree-builder, if there is of such, that doesn't cost the world like the Ancestry.com ones, i would be again, greatly appreciative. :D ;D
-
Hi Ryan,
Nice photo of the Opera House!
I live in Sydney but was born/grew up in NZ.
You a very welcome to the info and I am glad I could help you.
I would still try and contact the person on Curiousfox as I posted there in 2007 and am still around!
Be careful with Birth Dates as most dates given on Parish Records are only Christening dates and sometimes Families Christened Children in Batches. Sometimes both dates are there but usually not.
Try Tribal Pages for a Free On-Line Tree but dont post any info on living People in your Tree.
I'll scout around and see if I can find any more info for you.
Trish :)

This looks like Obadiah's death
Name: Obadiah Bennett
Record Type: Burial
Estimated Death Date: abt 1854
Burial Date: 7 Jan 1854
Age: 80
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1774
Parish or Poor Law Union: Hackney
Borough: Hackney
County: Middlesex
It has a user submitted comment saying he was born in Exeter and was a tailor and breeches maker in London.
Looking at the original record it gives his address as Brunswick Grove which fits with where he was in the 1851 census, so it is the right person. ;D

Thanks Jan :)
I am a bit worried about the Census inf for Charles's Wife though as it does not match birth c 1799.
Could Sarah have died earlier and Charles remarried another Sarah I wonder?
Siblings of Obadiah, born to GEORGE/ SARAH, Christening dates, Saint Edmunds, Exeter, Devon;
JOHN WOTTON 10 Dec 1762
GEORGE 04 April 1764
MARY 30 March 1766
CORNELIUS 14 Sept 1768
CHRISTOPHER 17 Dec 1769
MATTHEW 12 Oct 1771
SALLY 28 Sept 1783

Someone has a Tree with Obadiahs Bennetts Wife Mary as nee REDGATE.
This is not possible as they didnt Marry til 18 Oct 1807, Duffield, Derbyshire (IGI)
So could not be the Mother of Charles 1799.
They reason I always check the IGI Batch Ryan for Siblings of whoever we are looking at is to find the right Marriage.
EG;
George and Sarah had Children from 1762- 1783 so the Marriage was pre 1762. So I looked for a Marriage for George to a Mary 1762 +/- 2 yrs on the IGI. First Child has Wotton as their second name so it all fits.
-
I am a bit worried about the Census inf for Charles's Wife though as it does not match birth c 1799.
You could be right as she seems to have lost 8 or 9 years. ;D ;D
Also the christening you found for Sarah Blackall was for Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England, but in the 1851 and 1861 she gives her place of birth as Gt Bustead, Essex.

If that is the same tree I looked at, I dont think it has been checked properly as they have Sarah's death as 4th May 1860 in Jersey, however she appears with Charles in the 1861 census in Shoreditch St Leonard, Middlesex. ::) ::)

Do you have access to London/Eng births/Baptisms Jan?
John William Hyde BENNETT, 09 April 1817, Holborn St Sepulche
-
Record Type: Baptism
Estimated Birth Date: abt 1817
Baptism Date: 9 Apr 1817
Father's name: Obadiah Bennett
Mother's name: Mary Bennett
Parish or Poor Law Union: Holborn St Sepulchre
Borough: City of London
Father was a tailor, address Wood Street
-
Well another Child at least ;D
Thanks.
Think I might drop off this one for tonight and have a cup of tea ;D
-
The witness at Charles and Sarah's marriage in 1820 was John Bennett. ;D
Sleep well, it's lunchtime here.
-
I've just had a thought - do you think the family in the census may be wrong?
In 1841 they had 5 children, 3 fairly young - Frederick born 1832, Emily 1835 and Amelia 1839. They were living in St Paul, Blackheath, Kent
In 1851 there is only Charles and Sarah, where are the children?
There is a Sarah Bennett born 1799 a widow with a daughter Emily born 1835, Kent Road. They are living in Camberwell in 1851, not far that from Blackheath. Have the 2 families got muddled?
Jan
-
I am actually quite speechless!! let me digest all of this and praise you properly! Fantastic skills you have!
-
Hi Ryan
I'm not sure that the 1851 and 1861 census for Sarah and Charles are correct. See what Trish thinks when she comes back on line.
That John was born in Staffordshire, do your family have any connections from there? Also there is the age difference of Sarah and the missing children. However if the 1851 I found in Camberwell is correct, that means that Charles died between 1841 and 1851.
There is a death of a Charles Bennett in 1848 in Camberwell March quarter vol 4 page 49.
Jan
Added: Camberwell is where they married. ;)
-
Hi Jan!
My father would have more knowledge about our relation to Stafforshire, however I personally, All of this is VERY new to me. I knew i had English relatives, but 24 hours prior to my first post, i thought they were all up Durham north east way, an spoke with that proper geordie accent like, whey-aye man. haha
I am putting up a Tribal Pages family tree, and knowing it is public forum, i will not post anything in detail about any living persons.
Once i have the core foundations of it, i will display the link for your perusal and maybe even tell me where i may be incorrect.
Thank you again, for all of your work! I don't know how to thank you. This has all excited myself and my father very much
-
I will look over it all again tomorrow as its very late here.
Do you have any NZ Death Certs for your Family Gary?
I hope I havent led you down the garden path.
Trish :)
-
In 1841 Census no relationships are shown so the younger ones may be Grandchildren.
Back tomorrow,
Trish :)

Hey Trish! I will go up to the sunny coast soon ask my father about death records. I will also have a look over the things he has given me, because i am sure he has linked me to grave sites with g-stone photo's.

NZ Certs have amazing info on them.
See what you can find and Jan and I will have another scout around later.

I don't know if there is anything in this. There is a lot of Will's with a lot of familiar names!
...Deeper into the rabbit hole goes Alice...

This might be repeating what has been said earlier, but:
From what Ryan said in his initial post, I'm 99% sure that is the correct family in the 1841 census in St Paul, Blackheath, Kent. Blackheath, although in Kent then is now part of greater London and is on the south bank of the Thames, near Greenwich.
Charles 1797 not born in county
Sarah 1800 not born in county
Thomas 1824 born in county
William 1828 not born in county
Frederick 1832 born in county
Emily 1835 born in county
Amelia 1839 born in county
There is a baptism for
John Thomas Blackhall Bennett
mother Sarah
father Charles Wooton Bennett a victualler
21st May 1824 St Giles Camberwell (same church where his parents, married)
-
I really dont think that the 1851 and 1861 are the same people. I cant see why your Charles would be born in Staffordshire.
If you sent for Frederick Bennett and Ann Mason's marriage certificate - March quarter 1852 Greenwich 1d 624 that might confirm it one way or the other as it will probably say if Frederick's father was still alive.
-
I have looked over everything again and yes as Groom says I would get the Marriage Cert of Frederick and Ann if I were you to confirm his Fathers name and occp.
Generations further back look OK though.
Trish :)
EDIT, I would also buy Fredericks NZ Death Cert if no one else in the Family has it.

I emailed. they do not think that my Bennett's are from Kent, and do indeed believe they were from Staffordshire... interesting.

Back tomorrow Ryan.
Will look over it again.
