Hi
I hope someone can help with information on Paisley Industrial School.
My ancestor was sent there in 1917 when he was 9yrs :( for stealing from his mother and neighbours. He was there until he was 16yrs old.
I would appreciate any information anyone might have about the School as mine is very patchy.
regards Rosina :)

Hi Rosina
I'm assuming you mean the Half-time school in Ferguslie which sadly these days is a shell following a bad fire a few years back.
Am attaching a link to local paper which explains -

This link gives a bit more history of the school

It's been a number of things in recent past - mostly a night club which is what it was when it was burned down. I used to go the school across the road (Maxwellton primary now St Mary's). Is such a shame cos it was a grand building.
It was built by JP Coats Threadmakers who owned the now demolished Ferguslie mills (The mills closed in the 1980s) when it was deemd that children had to go to school as well as work. So the children went half time to school and half time work which is how it got it's name.
Hope this helps

Think it would be more likely to be a school like the Kibble or Thornly Park. I too had a relative sent to an "approved" school but tho he lived in Lanarkshire for some reason he was sent to a school in
Ayrshire (late 1800s) Falkryn has an entry re schools on 8th May. Where did you get the information that he was sent to an industrial school for theft.

Kibble still there and functioning as 'approved' centre. Thornly Park now campus lodgings for the university.
If Kibble is the likely one then possibly worth contacting them at http://www.kibble.org/index.php
I think Paisley library is best bet for Thornly Park records

Hi,
As your ancestor was only 9 years I am reasonable certain that he was sent to the Paisley Industrial School at Thornly Park, Paisley. The Industrial School had moved to new premises in Thornly Park in 1910 (the new premises were certified on1 June 1910). The previous premises were located on Albion Street, Paisley that had been the location from 1870. Prior to this Paisley Ragged School and Indusrtial School was on New Sneddon Street, Paisley. This was the Ragged School that Robin Gibb's ancestor attended.
Kibble School was classed as a Reformatory from the end of the 19th century.
Hope this helps,
Andrew
