Heres the reference for the birth of Charles J. Markie in 1919 (from 1837online). The mothers maiden name is down as "Dakin", not Deakin.

Hi Jemma - and a very warm welcome to RootsChat
I have found the WW1 Service Record of Charles senior on Anc***sty.
Charles Markie enlisted in the Royal Irish Rifles on 11 November 1914 and was 19 years old at the time - i.e. he was born about 1895.
He joined up in Belfast (or possibly Dublin - there is conflicting information). Regimental number 9454.
His service record yields the following information.
> He was born in Ballymacarrett, Belfast, and was a carpenter by trade.
> He was discharged injured from the army on 4 January 1918 having served with the British Expeditionary Force in France.
> He was the son of Eugene and Mary Markie who were living at 15 Annette Street (off Cromac Street) Belfast at the time of his discharge.
> He married Nellie Deakin on 25 May 1916 at Newry Cathedral.
> Charles and Nellie were living at 2 Surrey Street, Latchford, Warrington at the time of his discharge.
> There are no children listed in the discharge papers - possible Charles junior was the first?
Dave
PS. The US 1920 record is a red herring and obviously relates to a different couple (who were both born in the US and had Russian parents!) In any event I think the census image actually says Martin not Markie.

Interesting i will log this down and add it to the rest of the family history and i would guess then this is going the same way as the Markies of Scotland and the name will change to MARKEY !
It seems that my lot is an isolated lot and dont seem to have any irish connections then again i cannot find any connections as i stay in one County which is Northamptonshire and i am as far back as 1760 with no change in name.

hi Jemma
My side of the family are all from Northampton and have no connection to any of the others, i know this seems strange but i have tried to follow some of the other Markies to hope and find a connection to mine but so far no connections.
but i do try and collect all the info on the markie name and store it for the future. to prove or even disprove what ever lol
But this info clears up quite a lot for me.

I am delighted that you have posted this information , people just seem to disappear when they move from their native country and it is nice to see that the family name continues.

The Irish way of spelling the name Deakin is deighan.
