Title: 1918 Birth NSW GIDDEY*COMPLETED* with thanks
Post by: margaret1 on Sunday 22 May 11 03:05 BST (UK)
Hello,

I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to establish whether Reginald Samuel GIDDEY is part of my family. I have his date and place of his birth from his WWII RAAF Service Record online. Unfortunately it only has his father's name recorded for next of kin. I have a Frederick Giddey, married to Maggie Bella Irving in Stroud NSW in 1915. Maggie died in 1976 in Gloucester NSW. I'm hoping that my Frederick and Maggie are Reginald's parents.

GIDDEY Reginald Samuel

DOB: 25 April, 1918 in Gloucester NSW and died 2004.

Father: Frederick GIDDEY

I need to try to find out Reginald's mother's name if possible.

Thank you

Margaret  :)

Perhaps you have taken his death date from Ryerson Index.

Perhaps you have already requested a look up of the notice which may contain clues.

Some thoughts

Do you have Maggie's d.c. and does it show Reginald  .... or perhaps a newspaper cutting for her 1976 notices may help...

The Ryerson Index gives Reginald Samuel as age 86 and d o d as 9 May 2004, which points towards birth in 1918.

Cheers,  JM

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the suggestion, I wanted to see if anyone had the CD for NSW births 1910-1918 first, (that is if it actually includes those born 1918) and could verify Reg's mother's name before requesting a look up with the volunteers from the Ryerson Service. The death notice may or may not have his mother's name recorded. I am unable to find out the names of his siblings, if he has any, because they would have been born after 1915, therefore, if they were recorded in his death notice, they wouldn't be of much help at this stage of my enquiry.

I will certainly request the lookUp if I exhaust other avenues.

JM - Thanks for that - I'll order Maggie's  death certificate, was just hoping that the CD might have the information as well.

Margaret :)

This is the engagement announcement in 1948 for REGINALD and it gives his parents as Mr and Mrs F GIDDEY of Gloucester. He is their second son.

Again, inconclusive, but another pointer in the right direction. ::)

The headstone inscriptions for MAGGIE and FREDERICK give no childrens' names >:(

Another hint that you are on the right track for the parents of REGINALD and again perhaps you are already aware, but MAGGIE's father's name was SAMUEL.  This is recorded on the Cemetery link I gave above.

SAMUEL was of course REGINALD's second given name.

Hi Margaret,
I know this reply is a few years late but you are correct!
Reg Giddey is my great uncle. His parents were named Fred and Maggie.
Reg had two brother, Frank (my grandpa) and Jack Giddey.
Regards,
Grace Giddey

Hi Grace and Margaret,
These Giddeys are descended from John Giddy, son of William Giddey and Frances, who lived in Higher Thorn, Warleggan, in about 1796. William died soon after, and Frances married again but had no more children. John had many children who went to Australia. His son Thomas is the ancestor of Reginald Samuel Giddey. My ancestor John Charles Giddey is the son of Ann, one of John Giddy's daughters. She did not name the father of John Charles on his birth registration, nor was John Charles baptised, as far as I can see. John Charles later joined the Royal Marines and followed his uncles to Australia, settling in Sydney. He was my mother's grandfather. His mother Ann later married Paul Penrose but had no other children as far as I can ascertain. Margaret and I are distant cousins. We have corresponded in the past but have now lost touch, sadly.
Glad to have made contact with you.
Shane Marsh (female, in Canberra, Australia).

Hi Grace and Shane, thank you both for the updates.

I am descended  from John Giddy/Giddey/Gedye's son William, brother to both Ann and Thomas, therefore Grace, Shane and I are all distant cousins. William, his wife Jane nee Caddy and children Millicent and Thomas (my great grandfather) also travelled to Australia in 1875 and settled in Sydney.

As you know Shane, this branch of our family has been very challenging to research with all the variations in the spelling of their surname.

It's great to hear from you again Shane,

Margaret :)
