Hi I am looking for anyone else who is researching Baughs in this area.
My great great grandfather was John Ellis Baugh born 16 August 1848 Dark lane Dawley. His parents were Richard Baugh b Dawley d 1849, mother Sarah Smart b abt 1820 Wombridge, they married in 1844. Richards father was William Baugh from Donnington Wood, but I cannot find out any more about my Baughs other than that. JEBs father died in 1849 so I dont have any census info to track back on which makes things very difficult!
John Ellis Baugh married Rhoda Taylor in 1869, they had two surviving children, moved from the Dawley area by 1871 via Pelsall w Mids, and eventually ended up in Prescot Liverpool by 1879.
I believe they were all mining families.
It would be great to find out more or even a connection with other Baughs.

Thanks for taking an interest and looking that up.
I had found them in the census returns and I believe them to be all the same family as in 1861 John (ellis) Baugh is living with his grandmother Elizabeth (who is widow of William Baugh) in Dark Lane. So definitely a connection!! :)
I was wondering if anyone researching Baughs had found any connection pre census, especially anything regarding William Baugh, and possibly a marriage to Elizabeth. I know its a long shot! But its always worth trying! :-\

If you haven't already done so, you might want to look at the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and check there whether others are researching the same names. (Enter your own surname interest while you're there!)
The SIT can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it at the top of each Rootschat page.
(http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/english/surnames.gif) (http://surname.rootschat.com/)
The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!

Cardiff I have just had another look at your census info and noticed the second Richard Baugh b 1791 with Jane et al including another Beriah baugh. Sorry I missed the date first time round! :-[
They must be related somehow, maybe Richard was an older brother of William, unfortunately parish records arent very conclusive.
However you've got me going now! Ive had a look on IGI for Dawley Magna and found William Baugh 22 Sept 1799 parents Richard Bough and Martha, also a Richard Baugh 10 Jan 1796 parents Richard Baugh and Martha, however theres a Richard Baugh 17 Apr 1791 parents Thomas Baugh and Martha. So hard to say for sure!! Dawley is riddled with Baughs. However Richard Baugh (1922)s marriage certificate states his father William is from Donnington Wood, but he died pre 1841 so no census returns to corroborate it. The plot thickens. >:(

yep I have registered the surname Baugh in Dawley area, but havent found another doing the same, but maybe Ive missed something - not quite found my way round rootschat yet.

Hi... I have Hannah Baugh born abt 1816 Madeley, daughter of Samuel 1788-1852 and Sarah Taylor b. abt 1791, sibling Edward Baugh born abt 1821
Her father married again after Sarah's death - to an Elizabeth Ikin nee Pearce.
Hannah married first James Davis and then William Taylor in 1850 after being widowed.
Samuel and Sarah are in Rough Park, Madeley in the 1841 census.
Anything of interest?

Hi Rachel, my surname is Ellis and i,ve researched my roots back to about 1750 from the Dawley/Lawley Bank area. My GF (X6) was a John Ellis who married in 1764 to Sussanah Wilson and the marriage cert was signed by a William Baugh. Did you know Baugh comes from Welsh "Bach" meaning small or young person. The Baughs seem to have moved out of Wales into the Chester area before spreading into Shropshire.

Hi
Maybe a long-shot, but I was looking at some Bailey's (not the drink) yesterday and a Sarah Ann Bailey b 1831, wife of Beriah Baugh b. 1827 have a daughter Margaret b. abt 1850, they were living with Thomas Bailey (Sarah Ann's Father) in Dawley, possibly in the Old Park area in 1851. If this is of value let me know and I'll check my db further.
Regards
Geoff

Check out the parish registers for St Leonard's, Malinslee - the Baughs were using that church in the 1800's. It was the likely parish church for the Dark Lane area.

Thanks for that pointer. I had a look on IGI but Malinslee is not there unfortunately, the only one relevant is Dawley Magna. There are alot of Baughs but not mine!
My John Ellis Baugh was born in Dark Lane 1848 to parents Richard Baugh (d 1849) and Sarah Smart m 1844 Richard's father was a William Baugh and his mother probably was Elizabeth b High Ercall (1802) if my detective work in census returns is correct. I would love to trace their marriage but have been unable to do so. I dont think it would be registered as Malinslee as Malinslee wasn't registered as a separate chapel until 1843 although it was built in 1805, but you never know!
Thanks anyone all of you for your thoughts and ideas on the Baughs.

Rachel, I've got a William Baugh b. 1816 in my lot. Could this one be of interest to you? There are two different Beriah Baughs as well.
-
Theres probably a connection I expect as I have a Beriah Baugh on my tree also. B abt 1830 younger brother of Richard. I have a William Baugh but he is b abt 1829. I dont know the connection though.
When were your Beriahs born and who were their parents? I would be interested to know. I have found other Beriah Baughs on the census returns but so far unable to connect up. Theres another Richard and Sarah which look the same as mine but are not, and they have a young son Beriah.
Its a problem when they died young and therefore missed being on the census returns, at at least the later ones. You then get left with gaps you cant fill very easily.

I have a Beriah born in Dawley in 1827 that married a Sarah Ann Bailey. His father was also Beriah, b. 1794, again in Dawley. His mother was a Barbara ? b.1773. Her father was Richard Baugh, b.1743, who married an Ann Teece. Richards father was William, b. c.1698, but as yet unconfirmed.
Any help?

They are not part of my immediate tree, I have seen these on the Stemmata Botevilliana, which has a Baugh ancestry in it. Have you seen this? I suspect you may have as it is the best source I know of Baugh parish records at this time and has your names in it. This was compiled or started or something by a Beriah Botfield in times gone by.
Thanks anyway.
Rachel
