Hello Herts listers,
I have just been reviewing my tree on Ancestry and I am very confused over the Prior branch. The last one I have any definite data on is Sarah Miriam Prior. She is in the censuses as being born in Hadham. According to my information she was baptised 11th April 1830 at Water Lane Independent, Bishop's Stortford. I was daft enough not to make a note of the source for that info, I suspect it was the IGI, which I can't find any more, but it could also have been passed to me way back. The baptism date fits exactly with all the censuses. I also have her parents as William Prior and Susan Carpenter.
Someone else's tree has different parents for her, which is why I am now confused. Can anyone help me with the baptism and her parents? Should I be looking for baptisms at Hadham itself?
thanks,
Mark

FamilySearch.org has Sarah Prior, baptised 11 April 1830 Bishops Stortford, parents William and Susan.

Hi Mark,
Did she Marry?
Her Marriage Cert will provide her Fathers name and Occp.
Trish :)

1861 has a Sarah M NIGHTINGALE born c 1831 Haddam living in Middlesex.
+ a 30 Year old c 1830 Sarah PRIOR, Unm, born Bishops Stortford living in Middlesex.
This is where the confusion may have occurred ???
-
I hate to throw another possible in the Pot,
The Nightingales have a John PRIOR, age 15, born c 1835, Haddam, Herts Brother with them in Middlesex.
In 1841 he is with in Little Haddam, Herts;
William PRIOR, 35, Ag Lab
Elizabeth, 35
MIRIAM, 10
JOHN, 5
Mary, 18mths
HO107/443/8/Little Hadam

Well things have moved on since I last looked at this family. Trish, you are right to advise looking at the marriage, on Ancestry I have found her (spelt Sarah Mirian) marrying John Nightingale in Enfield. She is said to be a minor, which still fits with all the censuses, but her father is given as William Prior, a labourer.
The William I have on my tree is down in all the censuses (with wife Susan) as a carpenter, so it looks like I was wrong with her mother's name as well.
Shame the marriage doesn't give the mother's name, which would be helpful.
Now all I have to do is find her real baptism.
Trish, your last post has come in while I was typing. I did spot that census this morning, it looks right, but I will have to double check all this.

John was Christened 20 Sept 1835, Little Hadam to WILLIAM/ELIZABETH and Sister MIRIAM, 25 Oct 1829.

Was your Sarah M the one that Married John Nightingale? (under Knightengate in 1851 Census)
John was age 16 in 1851, sorry my mistake.
-
Yes that is her, I'm just looking at that 1841 census again.
-
Excellent ;D
-
Thanks Trish, this has all been very helpful. I will see if anyone has this family in their trees and see what pops up.

In 1871 John is with his Parents in Essex.
William is born c 1796, Little Adams (sic) an Elizabeth c 1799
RG10/1636/33/3
Elizabeth is with Daug Mary c 1839 in 1871. She is now Mary WOSKET, born c 1840, Little Badlow (Hadham on image)
Please dont follow others Trees exclusively as mistakes are often made that way.
I havent looked for 1851/1861 for them yet.
Possible Marriage fro William to Elizabeth CHARGE 1822, Little Hadham, (IGI)
Mull it over and let me know what you think.
Trish :)
-
Trish, once again you are right - none of the trees coincide anyway.
That new information is something I will have to mull over - as always one has to be careful with the IGI too.
I am sure I have seen the name Charge somewhere today on one of the censuses.
Computers are too fast for my brain nowadays, except when it comes to printing, where I am still way ahead of them.

Christenings to WILLIAM/ELIZABETH Prior, Little Hadham, Hertfordshire
(Source IGI Extracted)
WILLIAM, 02 March 1823
MARY ANN, 30 January 1825
MIRIAM, 25 October 1829
REBECCA, 09 December 1832
JOHN, 20 September 1835
1861 CENSUS William/Elizabeth are in Essex and he is under William PRYAR born 1801, Aldbury, Herts.
Next door is William PRYOR born c 1823, Lattle Hadmes, Herts, who I presume is the Son from Christenings above.
Yes, I understand what you mean about Computers. I can find something quick in the phone-book whilst my Children only use Google!
-
1851 CENSUS they are still in Herts under POYER!
I found them looking for Mary born c 1839;
Mary POYER born c 1840, Little Hadham, Herts
Well that finishes all the Census that I can find.
Death Regs;
West Ham Reg District where they are living in Essex.
WILLIAM Prior, June 1877, West Ham, 4a 65, Age 80
ELIZABETH Prior, June 1887, West Ham, 4a 115, Age 87
To be sure of Elizabeths Maiden Name you would need to get Mary 1839's Birth Cert.
Trish :)
-
Thanks for all your work Trish.
Is there going to be a difference between Mary's birth cert and (Sarah) Miriam's? I ask because yes this does all fit neatly, but nothing really verifies the identity of Sarah Miriam, which is really what I need to do.
-
Mary is the only Child born post 1837 when Civil Reg began that shows Mothers maiden name and Father name/ocp.
There is no Birth Cert for Sarah Miriam only a baptism/christening that can be found.
It is a difficult one to verify as she only appears to have been on the 1841 Census as Miriam and is Married by 1851.
The Marriage Cert Fathers name/occp matches though.
One or 2 other Sarah Miriams we can rule out as yours as they are unm in 1851 Census.
There is no Unm Miriam Prior on the 1851 Census that I can find.
I am pretty sure we are right but cant confirm definitely.
Maybe someone else reading this may be able to give an opinion.
Trish :)
-
I'll order up Mary's birth cert anyway, and also see if I can find any Licence or Banns for Sarah Miriam's marriage, they may carry more specific information with luck.
thanks again,
Mark

Let me know the outcome. Good luck :)
