Title: GERMANY: Allhusen - North East of England
Post by: lyzzydee on Tuesday 26 April 05 18:53 BST (UK)
Berlin Bob has pointed me in this direction, to try and seek some help with my German ancestors!

I have a lady in my tree called Augusta Allhusen.
On the 30th of August 1875 the 18 year old Augusta married my most whacky named ancester New Year Rickaby (guess when New Year was born ???)
at the time of the marriage the father listed was Jacob Allhusen a carpenter.

I have them on the 1881 census where Augusta says she was born in Germany.

That is it, I can't find Jacob anywhere, I can't find his death on the free BDM, although I now appreciate that he may well have changed his name to an English version of it.

Where can I go from here ??

Incidentally I found that New Year died aged 40 and Augusta remarried a chap called Chinnock.

I would love to be able to find out some more about the German connection!

Thanks
Liz

A Christian Allhusen owned Allhusen Chemical Company in Gateshead around 1840....any connection.

I have no idea if they are connected, Augusta was born in Germany so I suspect that the earliest they could have moved to England was after her arrival, which was 1857 ish . There may be a connection perhaps her uncle or similar, but I fell that they were still in Germany for some time after the chemical chap !
Thanks, I may yet connect to them, but I can't do it at the moment !

Hi Liz,

Any idea if she was naturalised ??
Have you tried searching the catalogue at the National Archives ?
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp

I entered ALLHUSEN and got several entires, but they look like they are mostly for Christiian !

Of course, if her husband was english, then she may not have needed to !

Any legends, rumours, gossip, about where in Germany ??

Bob

Here's another idea, what I call my "clutching at straws" tip:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,11860.msg75149.html#msg75149

if you have plenty of time, go to http://www.geneanet.org/ and enter ALLHUSEN

you get a list of 29 ALLHUSEN names.  Click on the contact links and you usually end up at a family history web site. Check here for any known names ..

Good luck,
Bob

Hi Liz,

There is a Augusta Olhaus from Germany born 1852 working as a servant in Durham on the 1871 census......could this be yours?

It's Rg10 piece 5034 folio 55.......maybe someone can check to give you details of the address, and whether it really just says Germany on the image. I just used the search engine via the national archives.
Can't see any other Olhaus's on the same folio.

Best Regards,

Emily

The image just says Germany, I'm afraid.  The address looks like 20, Back Shut House, Westol, Jarrow.

Augusta is working for an innkeeper named Nils Jonfrau (b. Christiana, Sweden) and his wife Catherine (b. Nassau, Germany).

Wow, Where did you get that info ??
I have been doing this for years and have had a couple of years off (I figure that I will need something to do in my retirement!!)
Is there an age given?
At the time of her marriage her address was the same as her husband to be,
43 Dock Street , South Sheilds
The witnesses at the marriage were Robert Edwards and Hannah Dover

Thanks, its given me another line of enquiry!

Augusta is 19 on the 1871 census - I looked it up on Ancestry where I have a subscription.  I couldn't find a likely-looking Jacob/Jakob born in Germany on any of the censuses unless he changed his name completely.

I was looking at the 1881 census for Lancashire and came across a Jacob Ohlsen born Flensburg Germany.  I know the spelling is different but it has a similar sound to Allhusen and the place in Germany  may be of some use to you.  Regards June
