Going back to 1851 census, I found this:
Reference HO107, Piece 2500, Folio 62, Page 34
Gronant, Llanasa, Flintshire
Luke, Evan Head M 38 Labourer St Asaph, Denbighshire
Luke, Elizabeth Wife F 32 b Llansanan, Debighshire
Luke, Richard Son M 16 Labourer b Llanasan
Luke, John Son M 15 Labourer b Cefn Meriadeg, Denbighshire
Luke, Daniel Son M 15 At Home b Cefn Meriadeg
Luke, Elizabeth Daughter F 11 At Home b Cefn Meriadeg
Luke, Richard Lodger Widower M 69 Shoemaker b Tremeirchion, Flintshire
That's the only Daniel Luke I can find in 1851, in North Wales!

Looks like Daniel and Elizabeth got married in Birkenhead?
March qtr 1865
Birkenhead district Vol 8a, Page 726
Luke, Daniel
+ and on the same page +
Davis, Elizabeth
Stephenson, Elizabeth
So looks like you need the marriage certificate to tell you her maiden name!
In 1861, there is a Daniel Luke in the Birkenhead area:
Reference RG09, 2649, 93, 3
Brighton Street, Poulton cum Seacombe, Cheshire
Kewley, Margaret Head Widow F 53 Provision Dealer b Shropshire
Kewley, Sarah Daughter F 19 b Seacombe
Luke, Daniel Boarder M 21 Bricklayers Labourer b Wales
Daniels date of birth is proving difficult!
He states his year of birth (according to census returns 1861-1891) as 1840.
But I cannot find an entry on FreeBMD for a Daniel Luke in that period, and the 1851 census I found seems to suggest he is older?

I wonder if Daniel Luke could be a descendant of my Luke Pritchard from Penmachno, who had three sons that I know of: Owen Luke(my GGGG grandfather, 1762-1840), William Luke (bapt. 1767) and Joseph Luke (bapt. 1769). The fact that Daniel has a son (brother of your Harriet, Wendy) called Joseph in the 1881 census, and a brother called Richard in the 1851 census suggests that it is not an impossible connection. Quite possibly the Richard Luke aged 69 in 1851 is the father or uncle of Evan Luke, Daniel's father, even though no relationship is mentioned.
Apart from the age difference between the 1851 and later censuses, there is also the difference in birthplaces: Cefn Meriadeg (presumably the present day Cefn Meiriadog, which is the other side of St Asaph from Llanasa) in 1851 and Llanasa in 1881. But perhaps Daniel did not know his birthplace nor his exact date of birth - after all people didn't need to have such information at their fingertips in those days as they didn't have to fill in forms etc very often. I would be more inclined to believe the 1851 census, where the information was presumably given by his parents and they should know :) Has anyone seen the 1841 Census for him?
I plan to look sometime soon at the Llanasa parish registers (for some Conways in Gronant) covering the time from 1812 and will keep my eyes open for Lukes.
