Title: Address in Pontefract
Post by: Hanford on Thursday 19 May 11 10:50 BST (UK)
Hello,

I was wondering if anybody thought this says " Addinglsey yard" ?
I'm trying to find where abouts this was in Pontefract but google maps says there's not such a place  :-[ :-[

Thank you  :)

Hi Rachey

I agree it does look like Addinglsey Yard.  I have ancestors who lived in yards in Pontefract,  not that one though,  they were horse breakers so I imagine it was a house with stables attached. I hope that helps.

I would agree with Addingsley Yard, what is this from and what date?

It probably doesn't exist anymore if you're looking on a current map.

Thank you both  ;D
A house with stables attached, sounds lovely!  ;D

The date was 1891, I'm trying to find a birth certificate for my great grandmother who was adopted by this family, she was born 1886 in Durham so I thought maybe she was actually born in Pontefract  ???
Hopefully the oldmaps website will have it on there  :)

It does say Addingsley Yd, but it could perhaps be meant to be Addingley's Yard which seems to be/have been near Ropergate according to http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Pontefract_Registration_District,_1891_Census_Street_Index_A-B

If you go into the census again you can view the way the enumerator walked round the roads and maybe get a name of a road that does still exist today to find where your Yard fitted in.

Very good idea, thank you  ;D Just had a look again and the yard is next to 3 Market Place. found that on an old map in 1893 but no Addingley Yard... Typical  ::) ;D

It looks as if Addingsley Yard was in Ropergate not Market Place. Both Ropergate and Market Place still exist
and there are still a few yards still in existence in Pontefract though with most just the name remains.I live in Pontefract and even I have trouble looking up some of the old address's.If you are a member of find mypast I have found that just typing Pontefract and then going through all the streets alphabetically gives the best results as many yards are hidden in the streets that you wouldn't find without doing a census search on the street first.I will see if I can find anything about it for you  if you are still interested but I am new to this forum so you may already have the information you need.

Hello,I've not heard of North Yard but I'll see if I can find anything out about it.Do you have any more information ? family names, years etc. Some surrounding towns and villages were classed as Pontefract in earlier census's even though they weren't actually here in Pontefract, also Tanshelf which is in Pontefract, was also classed as a district.I'm happy to help anyway I can...........Terese  :)

Good morning  :)
Really, thank you so much for offering to help it is so kind of you!  :)

The family are the Forster/Foster family, Ralph Forster born about 1851 or 1841 in Houghton Le Spring and his wife Mary born 1841 in Brough, adopted my great great grandmother Elizabeth Ann Turner, the first census she appears on is the 1891 with them in Addinglsey Yard...
There's no birth records for Elizabeth born in Coundon in 1886 so I wondered whether there was a connection with Pontefract... It's a long shot mind  :)

Their son Ralph, who was born in 1877 in Stockton was living in North Yard in April 1901 according to his military record, but I can't see him on the 1901 census, he seems quite interesting as he was thrown out of the army and sent to prison for committing a felony, not sure what yet though  :)

Thank you again  :) Any information you could find out about the Forster's, especially the son Ralph would be amazing as I am stuck  :)

Hello again,
Good news,I've found the exact location of Addingsley Yard,Pontefract.A visit to the local library had very good results. They have a number of maps of Pontefract and the surrounding area and I came across one that had Addingsley Yard on it.I didn't realise that the road layout was so different at that time.Anyway although the map was very large I've managed to get a photo copy of the relevant section.Although that yard is gone (Star Yard is still here which looks like it was the next yard up from Addingsley) so I have taken a few photos of some of the older buildings roundabout there.I did look at the census you spoke of,Elizabeth was adopted wasn't she.I can't find anything of North Yard in Pontefract but I did stumble on one in Knottingley where a boat was moored in the census.I will try and find it again.
Bear with me and I will do my best to scan the map for you today.Do you want it on here or would you prefer by email,if so let me know.
Bye
Terese

Good afternoon,

Wow! Thank you so much, I can't thank you enough for the research you have done!  :)
It would be great to see the map, I'll pm you with my email address  :)
Elizabeth was indeed adopted, though after watching Long Lost family on ITV the other night I'm wondering if she was actually a relative of Ralph and Mary's, maybe their granddaughter...
It's interesting that there was a boat moored on one of the censuses, not your usual thing to see on a census   ;D
