I have great-grandparents by the name of Mary Elizabeth Harker and William Fergus Helliwell in the Bradford/Halifax area. They were in Bradford for the 1901 census and the 1911 census. In the 1901 census William's age is given as 33 and Mary's as 27. William is listed as a widower on the wedding certificate 01/04/1893 where there names are given as William Furges Helliwell and Mary Eliza Harker. William may not have had this middle name all his life. I am unable to trace their earlier lives and anything about William's first wife. Can anyone help please?

Possible death
Sarah Ann Helliwell aged 28
Dec quarter 1889
Halifax 9a 326
There is no suitable death for an Emily Helliwell, so it looks as if he married Sarah Ann Willetts.

And also:
March qtr 1887
Halifax district Vol 9a, Page 404
Helliwell, Sarah Ann age 25

Isn't that too early if they married June quarter 1887?
-
Ah! Probably!! :-[

Sarah Ann Helliwell aged 28
December quarter 1889
This person died of TB on 3rd October 1889 at 82 Haigh Street, Halifax and was reported by her sister who was present at the death. Both sisters have the same surname and it is highly likely that they were both single. It would also be unusual for William Fergus not to be in attendance at his wife's death. So it seems that one Sarah Ann Helliwell was single and one died before William was married. I now feel stumped. ???

That's a nuisance. What was the sister's name, if we can find them in 1881 that will definitely eliminate them? It wasn't an uncommon name as there are 3 Sarah Ann Helliwells born 1860/61 in Halifax. ::) ::)

The death certificate only says E Helliwell. The initial is not easy to read but that is what I think it is.
In 1881 census in the Helliwell Buildings at Warley in the district of Sowerby Bridge there is a Margret Helliwell aged 71 as Head of Household. There is one married son, John H and one unmarried son, Ellis. There is one married daughter by the name of Ellen Helliwell (John's wife and could be daughter-in-law?). There is one granddaughter and two grandsons. The granddaughter is called Sarah Ann Helliwell. The daughter, Ellen, is 25 years old, the granddaughter, Sarah Ann is 20 years old which seems way too high. The grandsons are suitably young at 3 and 0.
A separate family, at Rails Lane in Midgley, has two granddaughters, Sarah Ann Helliwell and Emily Helliwell. This means that the two Sarah Ann Helliwells I have found both have sisters with the initial "E".
Damn.

The daughter, Ellen, is 25 years old, the granddaughter, Sarah Ann is 20 years old
That Sarah Ann would fit age wise with the one who died aged 28 in 1889.

Sorry, I should have checked, but the suggestion in KGarrad's post of "Sarah Ann Willetts" should read "Sarah Jane Willets" according to my search results. I have sent for the wedding certificate to see if it matches.
