Title: 1871 census gaps
Post by: lizajane on Tuesday 17 May 11 13:06 BST (UK)
Does anyone know the extent of the 1871 census in Londons dockyards ? I have whole swathes of family 'missing' and resorted to address look ups from marriage banns, etc which again don't seem to appear. Would large areas of the census have been 'lost' .I have brickwalled completely as a result as there are 3 John Dinmores all born around the same time - 1820's in the same area and the 1871 is my missing link.Thankyou :-\

It is quite likely with a surname like Dinmore that it has been spelt a variety of different ways.Have you posted all the info that you have on these 3 missing men and seen if any clever Rootschatters can find them?

Agreed, for example here is:

John Denmore, age 45, in St Mary, Newington, Surrey
John Dimore, age 46, Poplar, Middlesex
John Dymore, age 47, Chelsea, Middlesex

all to be found in 1871

Thank you so much carol and K. Helpful stuff indeed, and so swift !It's one of those things where it's sort of coming together, although the 3 Johns married Marys ,one possibly married more than 1 and they shared the same proffession.Any how I'm getting there, and currently have about 30 sheets of A4 in organised ( promise ) chaos. I  think I messed up somewhere down the line and am unpicking to re-knit . Thanks again.
