Summerhill is an adjoining village to Gwersyllt. As far as William Dodd is concerned,it just so happens that I am booked into the A N Palmer Museum at Wrexham tomorrow morning to do some research.Part of which was concerning a Dodd family from Broughton for my cousin in Canada.I will look for your William.Who knows he could well be connected to my cousin's Dodd family!
Regards
William Russell Jones.
-
I did you manage to find anything out about the Dodd family when you were researching, Hope you had luck with your research
-
I must first apologise for not answering further to the thread.I have just looked the notes I took on my Dodd visit to the A N Palmer Museum. It seems I could not find a baptism for William c 1821.Whether I was preoccupied on my visit or otherwise,I'm afraid I failed to look up his marriage in 1842.I'm afraid it will have to be left to my next visit!
Regards
William Russell Jones.
-
thats ok thanks for getting back to me hope you had luck

I found one or two bits of info I was looking for.

North Wales BMD has Jemima F Williams marrying Ernest J Clements at Holy Trinity Gwersyllt in 1920, these must be your Gandparents.

Hi
I hope I am doing this right as this is my first time on this site.
I was in wrexham at Gwersyllt Church and St Peters Church last weekend. I am helping my friend who lives in Gwersyllt and is a DODD to research his family tree!!
We did take some photo's of Dodd grave stones that I could look through when I am in wrexham next weekend.
I am also trying to trace an address which used to exist in Gwersyllt, Railway Terrace. I know it was there in 1911 and 1934 so any tips on how I post something about that would be great.
-
is your friend related to an emily alice dodd she married a thomas williams who died then she married a thomas hubert or hubert thomas not to sure whuch name is first she was my g.grandmother and lived in top road summerhill her mothers name was sarah davies who married a william dodd my grandmother was emilys daughter she was born in 1895
-
also if you can go on the census for 1911 and get the address theres a list for railway terrace gwersyllt if you can give me a name i can look it up for you
-
HI
Thank you for your quick response.
I have left his family tree at home so would need to check over the weekend and reply. I have found Frank and Edith Davies at Railway Terrace on the 1911 census (this is another part of his family).
At the moment I am trying to find where Railway Terrace would have been, as it no longer exists. We have written to the local paper this week to see if anyone can remember it, i know it was still there in 1934. It doesn't appear to be located on the ordance survey maps.
I will also ask my friend to join this site so that he can possibly give you some of the answers directly.
Thank you again
-
thanks very much i'll see if i can find anything out for you and let you know about the location of railway terrace

Thank you for your prompt response. It is good to hear from another member of the Williams family. I did hear from the daughter of Harry Dodd Williams about 4 years ago, she was living in Australia however, I have not been in email contact for sometime.
I met your Grandmother once when I was a child at Oscar's funeral. If my memory is correct my mother Marion called your Grandmother Aunt Mimi. I have some family photos and am happy to send them to you. I have a photograph of Oscar as a young man and a beautiful pencil sketch of Emily our Great Grandmother drawn by Uncle Ted Tilston who emigrated to Canada and had a successful career as an architect. I was aware the Aunt Gertrude lived in Oyster Bay, Long Island and married at the age of 69. The family story was that she had been a Nanny to the children of the Rockerfellas. Can you verify this?
I am a a Deputy Headteacher in a large London comp, my wife Pat is a teacher of science. My mother Marion was a successful primary school headteacher so the teacher gene is certainly in the gene pool!
Both my daughter are at University one in Sheffield and the other in Manchester.
I have many photos of Emily, Marion and my cousins if you would like me to send photos please send your address.
I look forward to hearing from you and receiving the family tree.
Best wishes
Stuart

Thank you so much for such an interesting letter oddly enough my mother always wanted to be a teacher she passed the 11plus but her mother (my gran ) apparently told her she was needed at home to help with her younger brother and sisters so she left school aged my 14,Yes please I would love some photos of my mums family I,m not to sure about The Rockafella story I was told that Gertrude Had married late in life to a wealthy jewish man who owned either Shoe shops or shoe factories and I have her in the american census as a cook for a family in New York I was also told she lived in Coney island at one point my gran was a lovely women I was 18 when she died aged just 69 in 1983also I think Oscar died the year after but I might be wrong if thats true then i dont think it could have been her you met, named after my mum who was given her grans second name of Alice Hope to hear from you soon Take Care
-
i,m sorry it was 1963 when my gran died not 1983
-
The white terraced house was called Mount Sion, this is the house in your photo, it was the family home on top road. Hubert Thomas was Emily's second husband. Apparently many of the records held at Gwersyllt Church were lost in a recent fire. Oscar died in January 1969 so it must have been other sisters I met, sorry.m
-
I knew Emily was married twice her first husband was Thomas and her second husband was thomas Hubert he was a great deal younger than her she was also diabetic and lost her sight in later years and she had two or three children to him do you know anything about a connection to York Minster or a cousin who was the Mayor of Bradley I,ve only been able to search back to 1851 as there aren't any census for 1941 I was told that those census never made it to London as far as I know they were those from Denbighshire also you mentioned a drawing of oscar was that done by a relation of the family my uncle was a brilliant artist so is my brother I,m not bad but not as good as them my mum always said I take after Emily as she had a sewing machine and made her sons shirts I to enjoy sewing
-
Hello do you know anything about Emily williams nee Dodds parents or her first husband Thomas Williams parents I have records for them if you havent got any I'm not sure how much information you have
-
Hi I only have family stories but no information on Emily and Thomas. Was Thomas a blacksmith by trade? The family talked about being a Dodd or a blacksmith but I was never too certain of the origin however, it was to do with certain family traits. I do know that Thomas was musical and built a small church organ that was kept in Gwersyllt church. He died of a heart attack. I knew that Emily was going blind and that Oscar was not too fond of his step Dad Hubert. Emily also had a cat that Oscar would torment occasionally when he lived at home. Stanley was one son from the second marriage he died of TB at the age of 9, Oscar described Stanley as angelic, very religious, he was very fond of him. Uncle Harry who I met as a young boy, lived in Caergwrle at the time and looked like Oscar.
Oscar fought in WW1 in the 14th batallion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers he was a Lewis Gunner. He fought at Ypres and Mametz Wood. Emily met him at London Rd station now Manchester Piccadilly on his return his Mum made him bath in the backyard before being allowed in Mount Sion. He was a coal miner at Gresford all of his working life and only missed the pit disaster of 1934 due to a medical appointment. Emily contributed to a TV programme on the 60th anniversary, I can send you a copy of the DVD if you would like to see.
I do not know about a Mayor of Bradley, Oscar was a Local Councillor in Bradley, Gwersyllt Council. No idea about York Minister. Interested in hearing your stories. I have informed my cousins, Emily's children, that we are in contact, and have given them the website.
Best wishes
Stuart

Thank you that was really interesting I have been researching my family trees for about twelve years now Emilys first husband Thomas was a blacksmith but Thomas Hubert depending on which census he's on was a miner I didnt know about Stanley my mum told me that Emilys second husband left her when she went blind Emilys mother was Sarah Davies and her father was William Davies Thomas's father was Also Thomas I have marriage certificate for Emily and her mother as soon as I can I'll send you the photos I have, at the moment my son has them as he is airbrushing them to get the creases and marks out but I will see him at the weekend I think over the years the story might have got mixed up about a mayor of Bradley it sounds more likely it is what you said about Oscar the reason I asked about York was because my mum told me yrs ago that her mum ( my gran) was married by her own father as he was a vicar but she couldn't have been as he had died and she didnt get narried till 1920 so I dont know why York Minster was mentioned sometimes the family stories are like chinese whispers I know a member of her family died at Gresord collery it might have been emilys brother but I'm not sure and yes I would love a copy of the recording thank you for your help and hope to hear from you soon and maybe we can keep in touch, Alice

Hello again just thought I'd mention that I have access to Ancestry and will look up Oscars war records if I can I've looked up my grandad who was married to Jemima Emilys daughter is was in France in WW1 and found quite a bit of information about his war years
-
Hi Alice, it would be great if you could find his war record. My wife and I and friends visited Mametz Wood in 2011, very moving experience and the most beautiful and haunting Welsh Dragon war memorial, you should find it on google images. Keep in touch. Stuart
-
Hy just a quick question when you mention Gwersyllt Church do you mean Holy Trinity or are they two separate churches and that applies to burials as well regards Alice

There are 2 border crossings from Canada to the US from 1940 & 1941 for Gertrude May Williams born Summerhill, Wales. They are hard to read, but it looks like she was working as a cook and her contact in the US was a Mrs. Crawford, 5-something Park Avenue, New York City. Her brother Edward is listed on one of the pages as living in Toronto.
I think she is with Adele G. Crawford at 580 Park Ave. as a cook on the 1940 census. An obituary for Adele's husband William says he was the head of the building firm William Crawford, Inc. in New York City and died in Southampton, Long Island.
So, I don't see any Rockefeller connection, but a pretty fancy address nonetheless.
-
Hy Shelly can you tell me where you got that information from please as I am on Ancestry.co.uk
-
You can see the 1940 census here - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K3YJ-ZZM?cc=2000219
The border crossings are on the same site you subscribe to.
-
Hi Alice, thank you for this information. Very interesting. Marion and Emily would receive gifts from Auntie Gertrude and my Mum remembers that Gertrude crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary liner! I am happy for you to send me your address by email stuartdavies@blueyonder.co.uk and please keep in touch. Any news of Oscar's war record? Edward or Ted must be the artist! Holy Trinity is Gwersyllt Church. It feels very much central to our family's history, Emily and Marion spoke of it and the people including Canon Aurelius Jones on many occasions.
Best wishes
Stuart
