According to the 1851 census my husband's second great grandfather came from Rotherhithe. I have been hunting for mention of the family name, Briveau, for some time. It is invariably spelled incorrectly. In the 1851 census it is given as Brivean and gives Lewis Briveau's date of birth as about 1800. If anyone could check this I would be most grateful. Thank you.

Hi Jane
I think this is probably his baptism:
13 Nov 1799 St Mary Rotherhithe
Lewis, son of Thomas & Penelope Briveau, 25 days old
Hope this helps

And there's this marriage:
St Mary Lewisham 24 August 1801
John Thorn married Penelope 'Brivyou' (sic) widow, nee Pierce

Wow! Thank you so very much. I have been staring at this brickwall for years. Could I be really cheeky and ask if there is anything about Thomas?
With many thanks,
Jane

Not that I can see (immediately)
Just found Lewis in 1841 in Callis Street, Clare, Suffolk
Lewis, 40, schoolmaster
Louisa 35
Frederick 14
William 10

Hmmm, there's a burial record for a Francis Briveau at St Mary Rotherhithe (27 Dec 1800)
age 35, of Trinity Street.
That's GOT to be him, hasn't it?

The dates are right and it certainly isn't a common name. Francis & Thomas aren't family names. I wish it was Frederick as that is still in use in the family today. I think you are right.

What about St Paul's Deptford 1803
marriage of Penelope Thorne (widow) to Richard Stephens
-
I knew nothing about this. It almost seems that Penelope was a serial widow with all the implications that might have. I will check the papers and see if they have any information.
Thanks again for your help. It is very much appreciated.

Jane, don't forget to check your query on the BBC Family History board, people over there have helped :)
