Post by: annemoranie on Monday 16 May 11 18:40 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find a German who emigrated from the UK to South Africa details are as follows:

Adam Schmidt

Born Cologne - 1874 but moved to the United Kingdom and was working in London

Profession - Tailor ( worked in Savile Row London )
He emigrated to South Africa between 1897 and 1907 ( more likely to be 1897 t0 1899 )
appreciate any help in looking up the passenger lists
Thanks in advance

Anne

would I be able to put a post in on a relevant rootschat page so that someone can look up the passenger lists for me.

There is a Mr A Schmidt on the Goth departing Southampton for South Africa on 20 April 1895, but there are no other details about him other than he is a married male.

Lots of other Schmidts but no first names or even the initial or birth date and I haven't come across one giving his profession as Tailor.

These are from findmypast so if anyone has access to Ancestry they may find something different.

Mr & Mrs A Schmitt travelled on the Gaika departing 28 May 1898.  Unfortunately there isn't any further information.

Hi Sandra

Thanks for your help to date. We have looked at the passenger lists for the period 1897 to 1900 and there are 7 possible matches. However, one of these is the one that you checked out which shows A Schmitt as being married.

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?submit=1&forenameSearchType=2

We know that he was single when he left the UK, so to eliminate the 7 on the list would you be able to identify which ones show single status.

Really appreciate your help so far on this research.

Thanks
Anne

Hi Anne

I've gone through all the Schmitts and Schmidts between 1897 and 1907 and here are the ones who were single and didn't give an occupation (nobody was a tailor - there was a doctor, musician and a reverend)

Schmitt 15 January 1898 on the MOOR
Schmitt 26 August 1899 on the BRITON
Schmitt 6 April 1907 on the BRITON
Schmidt 11 September 1897 on the SCOT
Schmidt 11 February 1899 on the SCOT
Schmidt 10 October 1903 on the GAIKA
Schmidt 4 September 1906 on the GOTH

Let me know if there are any others to look for
