I have searched in vain for the birth of Isabella. I have her marriage certificate and she married in 1891 (10 February) aged 23 so she must have been born about 1867/8.
On the 1891 census (taken on the night of 5/6 April) her age is now 24 so I am now guessing her birth must have been 1867.
Although she was married at the register office (in the district of Bingham), her life was spent in Keyworth and on other census this is given as her place of birth. I have checked on the Keyworth History site and BMD and cannot find her, does anyone have any ideas where else I can look, or can anyone else find her birth?
Incidentally, the 'Tongue' part of her name is missing on her wedding certificate.

Hi
It has this on the IGI
Isabella GUNN
Birth 1866 Keyworth, Nottingham
Parents:
Father: William GUNN
Mother: Phebe GUNN
but it has one of those strange batch numbers that does not indicate where the information came from ::)
Her birth may well not have been registered, it was not uncommon around this time.

Could have been used but not actually on her birth record.
Tongue is in Sutherland, Scotland and there are loads of Gunns in Sutherland and Caithness. Plenty of Scots migrants/descendants used their 'home' village etc in childrens names.

Hi
Is this the family in 1871?
RG 10/3549/102/38
Town Street, Keyworth (transcribed as Gann)
William Gann 46
Phoebe Gann wife 43
Mary Ann Gann dau 22
Isabella Gann dau 5
I wonder if she was actually Mary Ann's daughter and this is the reason she wasn't registered?
If so, the Tongue part of her name could have been from her father. There are several males born around 1845 called this in Nottinghamshire in 1871.

Good heavens - what quick replies!
Yes, her parents were William Gunn and Phoebe Millington and that's them on the 1871 census groom. :)
I think you are right about the 'Tongue' part of her name fifer1947, if not it's definately a possibility. :)
rosie99 This is her isn't it and I did wonder if her birth was never registered. One of the reasons for sending for the her marriage certificate was to see if her father was William Gunn. William and Phoebe (married 4 August 1846) had a son William Gunn Millington born abt 1846 a daughter Mary Ann born abt 1848 and then Isabella born abt 1867ish. I haven't found any other children. The gap does seem very large between them and I too wondered if maybe Mary Ann was Isabellas mother as she is the right age. As the father is listed on the wedding cert as William Gunn, maybe they lied to cover a 'base born' child or is there something else going on? :-\
Thank you for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

It could be of course that she was brought up thinking William and Phoebe were her parents.

Thanks groom, it had crossed my mind that this could be the case. I think this is going to be a unresolved mystery. :(
