Hi
I am trying to trace some people on my wife's fathers side of the family.
Firstly the little bit we know and maybe it rings a bell with someone or matches up with some information someone has uncovered.
Catherine (Kathleen) O’Connor (nee Burbridge) died in early 1970s. She married Edward O Connor and they are both buried in Deansgrange along with a son Edward. There is a vague family memory of another son (possibly Willie) married and living in Dublin.
Catherine(Kathleen) had one sister I know of – Lil Casey (may not have been her actual given name) who lived in Boyne Street, Dublin 2 Lil had a daughter called Lily also.
Kathleen had a daughter Mary (May) O Connor (born 1917 and died 30th March 1974 aged 57).
May married James (Jim) O’Neill (born 1911 and died 2nd March 1961 aged 50 years). He worked for Carton Brothers and moved to Sandwith Street from Boyne Street after getting married.
They had 5 children. Two died early in childhood and are buried in the Angels Plot in Glasnevin (as far as we know). Three lived until adulthood – William (Liam) O’Neill (born 1938 and died 1979) Angela O’Neill (Johnston) (born 1942 and died 1991) and Eamon O’Neill (born 1946 and died 2010) all now deceased. The boys went to school in Westland Row and Angela went to school in Loretto on Stephen’s Green
May worked in Johnny’s shop next door to the house on Sandwith Street.
Looking at the 1901 Census there seems to be only two families of Burbridges in Dublin. One lived at Warrenmount Place, Merchants Quay, Dublin 2 (Richard and Mary Ann with their 4 sons and 2 daughters) and the other family lived at Daniel Street, Wood Quay, Dublin 2 (George and Catherine and their 3 daughters).
In the 1911 Census Richard and Mary Ann Burbridge are living at Malpas Terrace, Merchants Quay with their youngest daughter Kathleen Joseph Burbridge. The son Martin J Burrbridge is living at William Street South with his wife. The other four are not on the Census.
The other family (George and Catherine) are now living in Lennox Street and their daughters are moved out and don’t appear under the Burbridge name on the Census.
Seeing as this is such an unusual name (2 families in Dublin, 2 in Leitrim and 1 in Cork) I was hoping someone may have some information. Apologies for the long post. All information or suggestions appreciated. Thanks for reading. Denis.

Hi there,
I have a Thomas Casey in my family tree somewhere. He was related to my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Burbidge. He actually worked out how our families were connected while he was still alive and contacted us out of the blue a few years back! Unfortunately I don't have access to his records so I may be wrong in saying that Mary Ann's father had a sister who married into the Casey family but thats my guess anyway. I still have to find out exactly how his family are related to us. But if I find out any more info I will let you know. Also, sometimes the name Burbidge is recorded as Burbridge and vice versa. They seem to be variations of the same name. When Mary Ann was married, her name was recorded as 'Burbridge' as was her father's name on his birth record. I hope this helps.
Regards,
Colleen

There also appear to be BORb(r)idge variants in the church records (and some in the census too).

Hi again Denis,
I've found out that my g-g grandfather had a sister called Kate Burbidge, but from what i know that was the name she was given at birth, not Catherine. I believe she may have called herself Kathleen though, since there are no marriages anywhere for a Kate Burbidge but there are several for Kathleen Burbidge in Dublin. Also, her sister Elizabeth, who was known as Lily, did marry Thomas Casey in 1919. It was their son who traced us previously. I don't know if this will help you or not but i hope it does. I will keep looking into it so if you need any more info on the family just give me a shout.

I am researching the name Borbidge (and variants). My 5x Great Grandparents were Frances Borbidge and Andrew Webb. They married before 1800. All their known children were born in Co. Wicklow apart from my 4x Great Grandmother, Jane Webb, who may have been born in Dublin as she was baptised in 1801 in St. Paul's Church of Ireland Parish, Dublin, so there may have been a Dublin connection.

I am descended from Martin Burbridge you mention. My family were not big into history but thought they came from Roscommon or up that way a border county originally. They never mentioned Dublin relatives other than immediate family. I have looked and it looks like they came from Leitrim where there were loads of Burbridges
BTW they hated it if people did as someone here suggested looked up the phone book and called them. They always brushed the people off. I think a letter fair enough but not a call
Sorry if not of help. Burbridge is not as far as I know a variation or Burbidge two different names

Hi.
There is a Mary Anne O'Connor living in no.5 Malpas Terrace in the late 1930's. Could she be related to your search?

Hi Denis.
There was a Richard and Mary Anne Bur(b)ridge living on Mount Argus Road in the late 1930's. In the same house, there was a Richard James Burbridge.

Richard and Mary Ann Maguire were my gt gt grandparents. He was from Meath originally and his father was Edward and his mother Anna. The family say that originally they were from Roscommon or Leitrim area.
There are lots and lots of Burbridge families in those counties in the early 1800s. There may be only a few now but Burbridge was a plentiful name before the famine
I doubt they are related to the Wicklow family though there is a daughter Kathleen. However I dont really know. Catherine or Kathleen (both were used interchangeably) was a very common name then
I got most of the info on them simply by googling Dublin records are online. There is a related family in the UK on ancestry

Was Kevin Street barracks not a DMP station?
-
The reply I sent quotes the garda museum records. I dont know whether he was DMP or RIC they did not say. The family said RIC.
My point was he was not related to the family on the query despite the postings by various people of the family and their address. His being a policeman was an aside it merely gave me where he was from and his marriage record gave me his fathers name
regards

I understand. However, I was replying to the OP in my post. BTW, RIC and DMP members were not allowed marry unless they had completed 7 years in the force. My own great grandfather joined the DMP in 1877 and he married in 1884. A 7 year itch? Lol.

I started this so I had better reply!
First of all thanks to all who read and replied this thread. As far as I can make out CollSloan is talking about the same family as I am interested in.Some of the names etc. she mentioned rang a bell.
Looked at the census of 1901 and 1911 and think I have found the correct family.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Trinity/Plunkett_s_Court/1311294/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/South_Dock/Queen_s_Terrace/77654/
Looks like they spelled it Burbidge not Burbridge.
Have found a likely marriage for her parents in Baltinglass in 1880 (Henry Burbidge marries Mary Anne Kelly) and a death of a Henry Burbidge (born c. 1854) in Dublin South in 1901.
Also found a couple of male children born to this couple in Athy reg. district(cant rem. which ones but 2 of the names on the census returns.
Will have another look at it tonight and post up what I have.
-
Ok, read through the thread again just now!
As far as I can see I was mistaken in my first post.I thought that the family name was Burbridge when in actual fact it seems to have been Burbidge.
The families I linked to in the census earlier today are the correct ones (fingers crossed !)
In the 1911 return Mary Carney is listed as both living with her mother at house 16.1 Queens Terrace South Dock Dublin and with her husband at house 16.2 Queens Terrace South Dock Dublin.
The mother and children seem to have changed their place of birth from Kildare in 1901 to Dublin in 1911.

Richard Burbridge (marriage 1879) was also my Great Great grandfather. Daughter Catherine is great grandmother, her son Joseph Kenny my grandfather.
Very interesting to hear about his police history from the garda museum records. Is there an online archive for these records?
Also interesting to hear that the family say that they were originally from the Roscommon Leitrim area.
Have you any information further back from Edward Burbridge (Richards father)?
Or any info on links to Roscommon/Leitrim?
Thanks
