Looking for birth of George William Bailey b c1855. Possibly father of Edith Matilda Bailey b1892 place unknown. According to ancestry member tree was married to a Elizabeth A ? b1856 Barrowdon in Rutland. Not convinced of this as Edith is written as Edith E and and william J Bailey living in OAKHAM Deanshold, 1901 Census. Her marriage cert shows her father as George william Bailey but no birth place.

as you say, the 1901 census has all initials wrong ....
and there is indeed an Edith Elizabeth born 2Q1892, Oakham District - V7a P356
so if your lass is defn Editha Matilda .....
the only registered full name I can see in the rough timeframe:-
Births Sep 1890
Bailey Edith Matilda Islington 1b 398
where & when did she marry?
-
Edith married in oakham Reg office in 1916 to albert joseph Underwood b1885 pickwell leicestershire.

Yes, saw it....
that Islington lass died later in 1890.
The Edith E in 1901 with the William / Elizabeth parents in Oakham was registered as Edith Elizabeth in 1892 ...
What occupation did she show for her Father on the Marriage Papers?
Have you found 'your' Edith in the 1911 census - maybe a bro Joseph appeared after 1901?
-
Unable to find any on 1911 cencus. Fathers occupation was stationary engine driver. There is a Joseph Bailey bc1882 Ashwell and living as Grandson in whissendine, grandmother sarah ann Bailey. Joseph was said to have taken my grandad George in.
-
bit stumped now .... altho that occupation eliminates the 1901 family ....
Joseph may be shown as Joe in 1911, Lewisham. Ashwell is the PoB anyway.... but no sign of an Edith with him either to eliminate that possibility :(

Ok, thanks for trying. Very difficult family. ???

Hi,
I've just joined rootschat today and I may be able to help.....or confuse! I'm researching all BAILEY's of Northamptonshire and can offer the following. George William BAILEY was the illegitimate son of Frances (Fanny) BAILEY born at Grafton Underwood in 1849. Frances' parents were John BAILEY & Sarah WARNER who were married at Cranford St Andrew in 1812. The following year they were removed to Grafton Underwood with their 4 month old son George.
I haven't done much research into this family although searching the census returns throws up a fair bit of information....except on the person you are looking for. However it would appear that he is on the 1881 census for Preston Workhouse (Lancashire) as follows:
George BAILEY, unmarried, age 30, Inmate, Labourer Railway, born Grafton Underwood Northants.
I hope this is of some help

Thanks for response, must be my lucky day. Hav'nt been on roots chat for a while so only just seen message so apologies for the silence.
There is a Edith bailey B grafton Underwood c1892. The only snag is her middle name was different to my Edith matilda. Her father is said to be a George William Bailey. But there is hope as at long last i have today been in contact with the grandaughter of Edith. Hence my lucky day. I am just waiting for more info, so fingers crossed the puzzle may be solved. My tree is on Ancestry uk under Orridge.
Many thanks

Hi Julie,
Please let me know how you get on with the granddaughter of Edith and if indeed this is the correct George William . I have lots more information about this family since my last post although unfortunately, for you, it's all about George William's aunts & uncles. One who emigrated to Australia in 1837 and became one of the first pioneers.
It would appear that George William is also on the 1911 census for Kettering Union Workhouse. Age 63, born Grafton Underwood. Farm Labourer, Inmate.
Regards,
Chris.

Hello again chris,
Been in contact with grandaughter of Edith but it seems to confirm the secrecy surrounding her background. oddly they lived in whissendine and Oakham where grandad and mum lived.
There is a Joseph bailey as witness to her marriage in oakham but no idea of the connection. Please keep in touch if anything comes up.

Hi chris, Do you have a tree on ancestry by any chance. Have got no further with George Wiliam Bailey, or his daughter Edith. (if he is the true father) There is no way of confirming his birth place or if he is the same George from Grafton underwood. Clutching at straws for any hints. His occupation on the certificate in 1916 was Stationary Engine Driver.
Frustrated ??? Julie
