My Great Aunt Kathleen known as Kitty Gore (formerly Routledge) died in november of 1991. She was born in Carlisle to James and Elizabeth Routledge. She was christened on the 9th March 1902 at St Mary's in Carlisle. She married an Ernest Gore in 1945, and he died in 1957. At the time of her death she had been a resident of the Garlands hospital and as far as I know would have no relatives. With these facts could anyone tell me how I might find out where she is buried. Who would have dealt with her death with no relatives evident? The garlands hospital closed some years ago and was replaced by the Carlton Clinic. I believe she would be suffering from dementia although throughout her life, apparently her behaviour was very eccentric.

Ernest seems to have been buried with his first wife, Nellie, in Carlisle Cemetery. http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page8.htm
N.B. This is a gravestone index, not a cemetery index.
Here is the cemetery webpage http://www.carlisle.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/parks_and_open_spaces/parks_and_open_spaces/carlisle_cemetery.aspx
As I always say, the price of an e-mail is very low. :)
Don't forget the crem http://www.carlisle.gov.uk/advice_and_benefits/deaths,_funerals__cremations/cemeteries__crematorium/carlisle_cemetery.aspx

Hi
I think they've got the cemetery register in Whitehaven with the other cemetery registers. With a date like that I'll have a look, though as has been pointed out, it could have been a cremation.
Best wishes

Thank you for that, I had been under the impression that Aunt Kitty was a family friend, I only realised she was related in the last year. I did not know Ernest was married before. I knew he had a little book shop in Carlisle.

I did not know Ernest was married before.
Hmmmm ... that was a guess on my part - I can find no obvious marriage. I just notice she died 1944 and he married Kitty in 1945 and ... 2 + 2 = 5. :-\
-
Nellie was 60 in 1944, Ernest 67 in 1957.
I think he was from Reading. He had a sister Ellen (11 in 1891) - could that be Nellie?

Hi
The date wou8ld be a huge coincidence if it wasn't him. There aren't a huge number of Gore's. I wonbder too whether it's your Ernest and his sister. A death index would tell us, but I don't thjink you get the age onAncestry without joining.
Looks as if they could have married away so no matrriage is no probblem.

It's him ... he was some sort of bookseller in 1911. There were over 40 Ernest GOREs in 1911.
If she was a spinster when she died, that's all it would say.
-
Hi
she was born on the 20th Nov 1901 and was aged 90 when she died.. If you want the death reg details let me know and I'll pm them to you.
As for wanting to know where she is buried you can email Richardson St Cemetary with the details name, date of death and where she died it will be easier for them to search rather than having to trawl through records which is time consumming to them... I do know that they charge for this service but I think that is if they don't have any details to go on. Anything is worth a try.
Good luck in your hunting

Hi Catherine,
Yes I would like to see the details please.
I would very much like to visit her grave.
There is a Routledge family plot at Carlisle cemetery but I do not suppose anyone at the garlands knew about it.
Thank you

I am also trying to find out about kitty's life, by the age of 9 she was living with her aunt Margaret Ellen Routledge at 8 Hartington place, Carlisle. I know her father James died 5th of feb 1909 but am unsure about her mother Elizabeth Routledge formerly Weightman. I am presuming she died but have been unable to find her. I know James and Elizabeth married o/n/d 1899 in Carlisle but struggled to find them in the 1901 census although I did find a James and Elizabeth with a son James in Elswick Durham. Another puzzler Margaret Ellen's sister Sarah Elizabeth Routledge was living with her Aunt Harriett Hay at 104 Windsor Road, Southport, also living their was my grandmother Nora Marguerite and a Jas Proudfoot Routledge age 11 which is the right age for the son of the James and Elizabeth at Durham.
Could he be a brother to Kitty?
Any thought appreciated.

Hi Carol :)
Looks like it's Ernest.
With a date that close I can find the entry in the burial registers at Carlidsle Cemetery really easily, assuming there's a copy here which i'm pretty sure there is.
FRrom the burial index I can find the position of the grave really easily as they have a brilliant map and Carlisle Cemetery is an amazing place and brilliantly kept and planted - in case anyone hasn't been.
I've a load of photo's back there.
Only thing is, I'm not sure quite hhow soon I'll be going back - qhite soon. If no one does it first I'll take a photo if you'd like. I have an errand there I must do as soon as \i get chance anyway.
Best wishes

I would like to visit his grave if I know where to go.
I have found a Sarah Proudfoot who married a Matthew Weightman in 1874, so perhaps I am on the right track, still not sure if James Proudfoot Routledge and Kathleen Routledge are siblings but it is looking likely.
Thanks everyone.

PS
I don't know if you're aware, but don't get too excited about other information.
I've solved aboput five generationbs of my family from one Lancashire grave, but heree, the graves are only for two people - something to do with the soil - so you don't get long lists of names.
Some people do though, purchaser adjacent graves to other family members, and also, some families have erected one large stone on one grave with memorials to other family members buried all over the cemetery and beyond!
If you can get the info quicker and for free, great, but if not, the offer still stands.
Berst wishes

I have found a Ernest and an Ellen Gore living with their parents Henry and Sarah in Seaforth Lancashire, plus other siblings. I also found a marriage between a Nellie Clark and Ernest Gore in Reading 1916 (2c 760). Not sure whether Nellie is his wife or sister.
Back to my searching!!

I also found a marriage between a Nellie Clark and Ernest Gore in Reading 1916 (2c 760).
That looks interesting - there was a GORE (Clark) birth in Carlisle in 1923. :) - that child died the same year.
-
I have found the birth of the child. I also found an Ernest Gore living as a boarder at 74 Melville Place, Liverpool, and he was a booksellers assistant, hopefully that is my Ernest. Born St Saviours, Reading in 1911.

That's the one I found yesterday. It was his occupation that made me suggest Reading as his birthplace. If you hadn't said he had a bookshop, I wouldn't have suggested him.
I couldn't help noticing the coincidence that his father worked at a biscuit factory in Reading (Huntley and Palmer's) and Ernie moved to Carlisle where there was Carr's biscuit factory.
It doesn't look as if his father moved with the job

Ouch!
Getting complicated! :-\ :-\ ::) ::) ??? ??? 8)

By the way, if you're in that neck of the woods and they were in bookshops etc, am I right in thoinking that one of the big Liverpool directories is Gores', and if it is might they not be quite well represented, as my family were in the Derby newspaper one of them was involved oin?
Worth a look on Old Directories site?? Just a tyhought. a bit late now though.

Thank you all once again.
Hopefully soon, I will go back to Carlisle cemetary and find other family graves, hopefully Kitty's too. I have sent for the birth cerficate of James Proudfoot Routledge to see if he is indeed Kitty's brother.
I had thought Kitty was an only child, if he is her brother just need to find their mother Elizabeth. Surely there must be a reason why neither child were living with their mother.
There are 8 Elizabeth deaths recorded on the carlisle history page, or I suppose she could have remarried.

The Carlisle pages only include burials for which a stone exists, as the site owner offers to sell photographs/MIs. The ages are easily found from FreeBMD.

You say James died 5 Feb 1909. He is commemorated on stone 15/18 ... along with 5 other ROUTLEDGEs. Perhaps their dates my be of use to you. Elizabeth doesn't appear on that stone.

Thanks for info. Just got back from a trip to Southport. James Proudfoot Routledge birth certificate waiting for me, he is indeed brother to Kitty Routledge. I know he died in Carlisle in 1982 so now trying to find some info on him. Thanks for info on ELizabeths will see if I can find out if any of them are Kitty and James mother.
