Title: Avenue Square Liberton
Post by: portybelle on Thursday 12 May 11 19:40 BST (UK)
I came across this address in the 1891 census for some of my OH's relatives. Anyone any idea where it was?

Hello Portybelle,

Avenue Square was in Newcraighall.  If you go to the excellent Old Maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and type in the co-ordinates 331900 and 671800, that will take you to Newcraighall.  Select from the list on the right "1952-1971 Post WWII Edinburghshire 1:2500", use the Enhanced Zoom, and Avenue Square will be in the centre of the map.  That side of the road, including the 1870s-1950s home of my ancestors, was redeveloped around the 1970s-1980s.

Regards,

John

Thank you - I'd forgotten that Liberton was a huge parish and not just Liberton as we know the area today. That makes perfect sense as the folk living there were coal miners. We still live close to there ourselves so will have awee look at where it would have been.
