If someone living in Sculcoates said they were born in Sutton, where would that be please? There seems to be several Sutton type places in Yorkshire and I don't know the area well enough to take a guess.
many thanks
-
My guess would be Sutton-on-Hull, now a suburb of Hull.
It's the only Sutton I can find in the East Riding!
-
Thank you.

Certainly all of my partner's East Yorkshire ancestors, when referring to Sutton, meant the Hull one. For some of them, Sutton and Sculcoates seem to be pretty much interchangeable, so perhaps they were I think Sutton was part of the Sculcoates district of Hull.

so, is there a chance then that someone would say they were born Sculcoates on one census and Sutton on another or do you think it might be two different people and places?
-
Yes, I believe so. Census information is dependent on who actually gave it so if a father, for example, said his son was born in Sculcoates, that same son, ten or twenty years later could easily say Sutton. A man giving information about his wife's birth place will only give what he knows, so it could be just the town, rather than the district within it. Some people are very precise when saying where they were born, others seem to give amuch more generalised answer.

This shows their relative (!) positions:

Hi...Sutton is about 2 miles from Hull and as already mentioned..is known as Sutton On Hull...formerly Sutton In Holderness until the boundary change and it then became a suburb of Hull...Here's some info on Sutton that should help:

I will have a look through that. Only just found the connection to Sutton so nothing yet has been researched. Well at least I 'think' I have a connection to Sutton... still need to confirm this.
Once again, thanks for your help.
